And this was in response to someone who was admittedly shield running over 5k away (though as Del said, there's no set distance) using thrust.

Right - so when the distance is crazy then its considered bad. Fair enough, It would also depend greatly on whether or not the person who is shooting at you could be bothered filing a report for it... which seems a tad petty to me especially if the distance is not so great - but that's just me.
Sorry if I sounded "condescending". I really just wanted to make sure it was clear. It's a constantly debated rule, so it gets tweaked in each person's mind in their own way. I know I had no clue awhile ago.
Anyways, I guess it's all situational. I think it's pretty clear when someone is shield running, in any case, but I'd never bother with a report for it.
I personally think there's a huge difference between shield running to stay alive, and leaving the engagement to recharge. I've been accused of shield running in my bomber by a VHF pilot, after I had my own mine blown up in my face, and had nothing left but my supernova. That little piece of Nuclear fireworks cost me most of my bots/bats, too, so I really had my back against the wall in that fight.
I did my best to force the fighter to fight the battle on my terms instead of his, which would've been a guaranteed death on my part. The trick I used in that case was thrusting and EK'ing to force him into a straight flight to keep up with me, nullifying his maneuverability advantage, and making it much easier to cram a supernova down his throat. I eventually won that fight.
That's just one example of the fine line between cheap tricks, and sound battle tactics, and a sterling example (I think) of why there's never been a bright-line rule on this issue.
Mh, I think there might have just been some miscommunication/understanding. I know the difference between shield camping and shield running, but I never remember which name applies to which one. I'm sure there are others that are the same as me.
It seems the LPI officer may have been calling you a shield runner if you were dodging excessively (not nessicarily running away) around in circles to wait for your shield to come back up before shooting again. Its' common for people fighting against light fighters or eagles, and also common for people in highly manuverable ships like light fighters and eagles.
My guess would be that the LPI officer was getting frustraited, it takes long enough to kill anything in a light fighter, let alone when your opponent deliberately prolongs the fight by flying in evasive circles.
I know I hate when Xenos do that against me...
Illegal, no. Annoying, yes. Unless the LPI officer threatened a sanction, don't worry about it.
But my advice is, if you're loosing a fight, run away, don't try any tactics one could consider 'cheap' to win. There's no requirement during an engagement that one of the two parties has to die for it to end. And it makes more RP sense to flee than to die. (but never flee and leave your comrades to die!)
It will also avoid things such as this happening.
As far as the server goes I'd say about in one out of five of all pvps on discovery the other guy is a bad loser and accuses you of breaking one rule or another (ussually one he just made up) it's one of the reasons I haven't been playing as much as I did.
My advice is get used to ignoring it people are just sore losers and remember it''s the minority of the server.
Oh and as long as you didn't go into cruise you were not shield running.
Well i didnt use cruise until he called for backup. thats when i decided too pull my thinng out of there and run. but then i got CD'd and had too thrust away.
but the thing that bothers me mostly is that i was loseing...so why did he complain?
I get this all the time from whiney lawfulls. Ohh noez u iz dodging mah shot I quit cuz you is shield running. It is typical of guys who cannot aim, win or have to call in a massive amount of backup for a single light fighter. Don't let it bother you. Have fun and be a good sport. Thats what the game is all about.
The guys on here have laid out the real rule pretty well. It is shield running, not dodging.
