Don't boil your noodle just yet. Just turn off the UAC (User Account Control). If you have trouble finding it, just go windows Help (press F1) and put UAC there.
Whatever people might say here - Vista is still a pain... and a compromise at best.
You'll need to disable this, delete that get rid of that etc etc the list is long.
And yes AV and Firewalls are not that compatible with Vista & Freelancer.
so unless you plan to have more than 4GB of RAM and want a 64 bit OS with Vista 64, XP SP3 is much more
reliable and painless option.

Well i've had no troubles since January (Vista Ultimate) but i've heard lots of people with problems. Honestly, if i had the choice, i'd probably go XP.
I have no issues with Vista.
Only issue I had was with the UAC which is actually nice to have. Yes I would have liked for it not to be so over-the-top but it's still a feature. I turned it off as it was refusing to unpack some .rar archives etc.
No problems with Vista and Freelancer though. I unfortunately caused an issue with the registry so around 90% of freelancer tools (Account manager etc) fail to work but that was my own fault, I meddled a little too much.
Basically, stick with Vista unless it gives you trouble. If it does, give us a yell first and we could probably help. If we can't, run to XP:P

Turn UAC off. You're golden then.
Just make sure that you have more than 1GB of RAM. It's cheap, and Vista does need the RAM.
But like lots of these guys - I've been running Vista with FLMM and FLAM and no issues.
