ok...from 4.84 to 4.85 GB weapons use more power and have less range, many got power plant reduced, minor adjustments on hull, shield regen lowered, missile spam reduced greatly. Oh yeah they go 10 units faster then before...yaay for them
GBs ability to kill anything larger then GB or transport class is close to impossible now (compared to 4.84). We had a lot of discussions here on this forums about GBs usage and what are they meant for. Despite that gunboats are vanilla bombers most of you agreed that they are meant to confront fighters.
All changes were made to accomplish that and now lone GB can hold off 3 fighters or two bombers and that is wrong?
Now Gbs only by mere numbers can kill anything larger, but ANY class of ships can do that. With enough Starfliers you can wreck zoner BS.
So let me say this clearly...in this release GBs are drastically nerfed compared to 4.84. Finally they have their own place and they should be there. ONLY capital ship capable of dealing with multiple smaller targets. Support vessels that can protect cruisers and battleships from annoying bombers or rather safe way of pirating of small and mid sized transports.
So yes they should wreck multiple fighters and bombers. Its their job. Or do we need to nerf them beyond level of usability just to prevent abuse or large number of them?
They are cheapest capital ship and they will always come in numbers across the server.
The tasks gunboats are for cannot be simulated in the game. In RL a fighter or fighterbomber crew cannot opperate for a long time, because pilots become tired, and they are normally for short distances only, while the gunboats have more supplies and better equipment onboard and the crew can work in shifts.
This would make gunboats the favour ship of long range patrols, recon missions, surprising raids, i.e. all long time tasks and tasks requiring better equipment (sensors), while the use of cruiser for those tasks would be too expensive or the sensor profile too big.
In PVP their tasks are taken over by cruiser bomber and VHF.
If you want, you can consider gb's as multipurpose ships for different roles, but perform the roles worster, than a ship specialized for a certain role. So if you cannot decide what ship to use, fighter, bomber or cruiser, take a gunboat.
i think gunboats are fine as they are, they are great for supporting the bigger ships and also supporting smaller ships. alone it takes the skill of the player to win.

My 2 cents - Gunboats are fine as they are. Depending on the skill/loadout a bomber can kill it or a single gunboat can clear bombers and their partner fighters from the system.

Fighters are probably the lowest rung of the ladder. But that's the way it should be. Bombers care currently capable, in the right hands, of killing fighters. However, more often than not, fighters trump bombers.
Gunboats are meant to mop up fighters and bombers in a short amount of time so that the capital ships can come in and capture the battlefield. They're MEANT to be able to kill smaller craft easily. Just like they're meant to be blown up by larger capital ships.
