CDI: The Civil Defense Initiative
Planet New London - New London:
Anyone entering Bretonian space has likely encountered CDI or spoken with one of the constables in this militia. To gain a deeper understanding of their operations, we sent our trusted reporter, Kris Jenkins, to gather more in-depth information. But first, here’s a brief overview of this unique organization.
The Civil Defense Initiative (CDI) was formed during one of Bretonia's darkest hours—the Gallia invasion, which culminated in the devastating loss of Leeds. Desperate to maintain order, the crown began siphoning manpower and equipment from all branches, including the Bretonia Police Authority (BPA). With the BPA stretched thin and under-equipped, opportunistic criminals swarmed in, exploiting the unprotected space. CDI was created to fill these critical gaps, focusing on safeguarding trade routes in Cambridge and Omega-3. True to its name, it is a Civil Defense Initiative tasked with holding the line against the Mollys, Corsairs, and Hessians—challenges all too familiar to residents of the Omegas.
In recent times, however, the CDI has come under scrutiny, with reports of bribery, incompetence, on-duty inebriation, racketeering, and similar allegations. Yet according to our trusted reporter, Kris Jenkins, these accusations may be grossly exaggerated. Below is a recording of his interaction with CDI constables as they apprehended a possible kemwer munitions smuggler.
Our trusted reporter Kris Jenkins was sent to learn more about this situation by asking the affiliated parties.
CDI)Sgt-Alfie.Howard: Ah, gotcha.
CDI)Appletree: T: Just a rutinary inspection
CDI)Sgt-Alfie.Howard: Well, well, what's this then?
CDI)Sgt-Alfie.Howard: Do you know why we've stopped you, pal?
Violet-1: Well you just said, routine inspection
Jenkins|TOM: Well this is not what I wanted to see but it is good material.
CDI)Sgt-Alfie.Howard: Routine inspection that turned up something concerning.
CDI)Sgt-Alfie.Howard: Can you elaborate on the nature and origin of your cargo, eh?
Violet-1: Tho I have to say, unusual for the "police" to be disrupting trade lanes
CDI)Sgt-Alfie.Howard: Needs must
CDI)Sgt-Alfie.Howard: We're a pragmatic bunch
Violet-1: that's usually something you see criminals doing
CDI)Appletree: T: That was a corsair thing Sir or Madam
Violet-1: Fair then
CDI)Sgt-Alfie.Howard: And here comes the Cheddar too.
CDI)HMC-Cheddar: Cheddar on scene.
CDI)Sgt-Alfie.Howard: Right, well we've stopped you today on suspicion of carrying contraband into Bretonian territory.
Jenkins|TOM: Quite a force the CDI has.
Violet-1: Quite, don't they.
CDI)Sgt-Alfie.Howard: And let me tell you, you ain't the first bugger we've caught hauling that stuff today
Jenkins|TOM: Those are some fearsome ships.
CDI)HMC-Cheddar: These again.
CDI)Sgt-Alfie.Howard: So where was this lot headed, eh?
Violet-1: Mind you, this was contracted by the Bretonian science community for study. This is headed for planet New London.
Jenkins|TOM: The camera is rolling.
CDI)Sgt-Alfie.Howard: Is it really.
CDI)Sgt-Alfie.Howard: This is the look of surprise on my face.
CDI)Sgt-Alfie.Howard: Right captain, I'm going to need your name and licence number.
Violet-1: it is a very sought out comodity, and dangerous in the wrong hands.
CDI)Sgt-Alfie.Howard: Quite.
CDI)Appletree: and the lights! ask him to turn on the lights!
Violet-1: It's the only reason I am even using trade lanes in house space, as it is going into the right hands.
CDI)Sgt-Alfie.Howard: That remains to be seen.
Violet-1: You are welcome to accompany me to ensure it goes there, if you so wish
CDI)Sgt-Alfie.Howard: In my long experience, this shite usually ends up in Dublin, facilitating terrorist activities.
CDI)Appletree: to the camera the first line of defense of the bretonian law is to have the safety lights in correct working condition
CDI)Sgt-Alfie.Howard: And I s'pect that's where this lot would have gone too, if we hadn't been in the way.
Violet-1: I prefer my head on my shoulders, so I stay clear from Dublin and the likes of Mollys and Corsairs.
Violet-1: Those bunch are too unpredictable for my taste.
CDI)Sgt-Alfie.Howard: In any event, you didn't actually answer my first question. Where'd this lot come from?
CDI)Sgt-Alfie.Howard: Who sold it to you?
Violet-1: This is coming from Freeport 11.
CDI)Sgt-Alfie.Howard: And they've got these weapons just piled high on the shelves I assume?
CDI)Sgt-Alfie.Howard: Cheddar, what do you lot make of this nonsense?
Violet-1: Well, since it's a station in deep space, and prone to frequent Nomad raids, I was not surprised that they had this in stock
CDI)Appletree: Sir! look the scaners! He has a blackmarket engine
CDI)Appletree: to the camara thats is the first rule of the smugglers, ilegal... things
CDI)Sgt-Alfie.Howard: Don't pay that too much mind, Appletree. Probably means he's behind on his MOT.
CDI)HMC-Cheddar: Honestly..
CDI)Sgt-Alfie.Howard: I'm more concerned with the cargo.
Violet-1: I'm sorry, what's with the camera shtick?
Jenkins|TOM: I work for the Omega Mirror.
Violet-1: Oh, I see.
CDI)HMC-Cheddar: I believe he's dodged the question about his registration.
Jenkins|TOM: And This will be on the news.
CDI)Sgt-Alfie.Howard: Registration and name, aye.
CDI)HMC-Cheddar: Just what is your licence number, Captain?
Violet-1: License number FL-6647. This is my trade license.
Violet-1: Do you need the ship one as well?
CDI)Sgt-Alfie.Howard: And what name is going to appear if we run that?
Violet-1: The name's Samwise Otoruk.
CDI)HMC-Cheddar: Uhm.
CDI)HMC-Cheddar: I got nothing.
CDI)Sgt-Alfie.Howard: Well Cheddar, I'll leave this one up to your discretion.
CDI)Sgt-Alfie.Howard: D'you trust the grubby Freelancer who's running illegal weapons?
CDI)HMC-Cheddar: I most certainly do not.
Violet-1: It's a Freelancer identification, I would not imagine it being readily available on site.
Violet-1: That's why we have that lovely beurocracy
CDI)HMC-Cheddar: I would suggest we load up Cheddar and Appletree with as much of the cargo as fits, then escort him to drop the rest on New
CDI)HMC-Cheddar: London. Financial fine and warning.
Violet-1: As I said, if you do not trust the destination of this cargo, you can escort me to the Bretonian Science Institute on New Londo
CDI)Appletree: giggles Sir, Yes sir
[OOC] Violet-1: London*
CDI)HMC-Cheddar: Release all your cargo into space and we'll pick up what fits, the rest you will take down to New London.
Violet-1: Very well then.
CDI)HMC-Cheddar: Take the rest.
CDI)Sgt-Alfie.Howard: And that lot will be going to the spaceport impound. The institute can reclaim it from local authorities if they're above board
Violet-1: Very well.
CDI)HMC-Cheddar: Alright, lets go.
CDI)Sgt-Alfie.Howard: If they're not, no doubt the BIS will be knocking on the door to ask a few pointed questions.
CDI)Sgt-Alfie.Howard: I hope you realise we're being
CDI)Sgt-Alfie.Howard: *ing 'ceptionally lenient here.
CDI)HMC-Cheddar: Perhaps you can take some gold from Coleraine on your way out, Violet.
CDI)Sgt-Alfie.Howard: In future, if you're asked to bring in a load of sketchy cargo on commission, get approval first.
CDI)Sgt-Alfie.Howard: Or we'll have a more serious issue on our hands.
Violet-1: I might, though I think after such a long trip, I'd prefer a few drinks and some rest.
Violet-1: Understood officer.
Violet-1: Now, if that is all, I shall take my leave.
CDI)Sgt-Alfie.Howard: No objection from me. Bugger off then.
Violet-1: Hope to never see you again.
Traffic control alert: Violet-1 has docked
CDI)Sgt-Alfie.Howard: Exercise better judgement and you won't.
Jenkins|TOM: And Cut, I am gonna be honest that was impressive.
CDI)Sgt-Alfie.Howard: It'll be nice to have the CDI in the news as something other than a casualty count for once...
Jenkins|TOM: Do not worry after this you are geting the first headline.
CDI)Appletree: Or corruption he whisper for himself
CDI)Sgt-Alfie.Howard: Right, good job lads.
CDI)HMC-Cheddar: Another job well done.
CDI)Appletree: Glad to defend the law and order Sir! Salute effusively
CDI)Sgt-Alfie.Howard: Uh-huh...
Jenkins|TOM: So would you mind if I ask about the CDI's stand on the event in... camera abruptly stops rolling here.
As you can see how the constables handled the situation professionally and generously I might add with how the transport's situation was handled.
