Actually at some point we will be able to dock on player-flown carriers.
How should it work with rules/balance then? Any suggestions?
I'd say carrier should only have some limited (virtual) number of supplies. So between getting docked at a base it would for example allow max:
12 dockings/launches
800? bots/bats refilled to docked ships
700 missile ammunition pieces
etc..
Igiss says: Martin, you give them a finger, they bite off your arm.
It will be indeed nice. What about the Carrier role then? Cruiser guns Battleshi shield, anti fighter guns, lots of armour but very weak against battleship or?
I would like to see the carrier indeed as carrier - well defended against small crafts staying out of range of the main battle. 12 Docking slots are a bit too much if the rules allow dock resupply and re-engage. If the docking is forbidden in battle then it is ok. I see 4 slots more then enough according to the server limitations - 200 players. Big battle in Disco dimensions is like 6-7 ships per side.

May be better make a limit like ship/hour... Example-For one hour, 4 players on fighter/bomber ship can dock to players carrier. And player can't stay to long docked... 5 minutes should be enought for reapir and resupply.
Generally, Carrier can fight with light BS, like BHG's "Mako", Bretonia BS, and Osires, because he has strong armour, and ofcourse has support. Like in reality:Lonely carrier-easy target.
Don't bother with docking too much. Just make it's max speed 60/250, give it a light armour, lot of point defence weaponry and a bunch of nanites and shield batts to trade around.
Also, ammo would be nice really, but I think I read someone somewhere stating that it migth be pushing it for the server.
A gadget only mountable to carriers and makes a group of friendly fighter npcs appear, big carriers (lib one) might be able to mount 2 while the smaller ones (geb) might only carry one. Once used it dissapears, and have to be rebought at a base for a somewhat nasty sum of money. :D
I thought all battleships in Freelancer were fighter carriers. Been that way since 1.0 and we've originally been docking on them before we've been able to fly them. There is no difference in an FL battleship and a carrier except terminology tossed in by Disco. If it were made that only player carriers were dockable will we be getting rid of/replacing the dockable NPC battleships and just say that it never happened?
Edit add: I am curious because I based the RP of GMG|'s flagship, Ayakashi, on the assumption that just like noormal Vanilla it's a ship carrier and it's purpose is to carry GMG| forces into enemy space.
