I don't imagine it was an oversight, but rather a choice, since it shows up for both of the unlawful mining factions.
Well, I'm faster with a fighter than a hegemon. And then it depends on how much ore you have floating around you. I've never made it above 500 without starting to shoot the already mined ore, so even in a worst case scenario the losses wouldn't be that high.
Also, mentioning the cruiser was more about the fact that a spatial is actually useful against the largest ship classes if equipped with a snac. Against a gunboat and below you will be easy prey.

Ah, that makes more sense. I usually get up to 1,600 before I pull out my smuggler. Hurts a lot more to leave it. I've beaten gunboats up before, though admittedly they were only Imperators.
Spatial is a heavily armed and armoured figther fit to challenge a gunboat. Unfortunately, it also has the size of a typical gunboat but without the insane shield regeneration rate to save it.
I would say it is a good choice of ship for solo piracy. Since when equipped with a SNAC, it can be a real threat to any transport. Of course, its fatal flaw lies within the fact that it will be child's play to any self respecting figther, bomber or gunboat.

How exactly would you stop the traders/miners when they cruise away with your one slot and SNAC on it?
I saw people with full Tizonas and SNAC combined with Fighter escorts to CD the targets. It is a good ship to team piracy since it packs a lot of bots/bats and can feed the fighters, have extra cargo to pack more supplies CDs /mines /CMs and it can pick some cargo even. In both ways it is effective when you have SHF with VHF escorts againsts VHFs, if they target the VHFs, the SHF will feed them with bots, if they target the SHF, the SHF can survive a bit till the VHFs kill the enemies. If you add bomber to the enemy side then the SHF is in trouble.
The ship have limited usage against GBs and Cruisers/Battleships as heavy armoured bomber, against everything else there are better alternatives. No way to kill bomber or fighter into it. There is option if you are really good with the mines to add Screamer and Nuke but if you will use this tactic you need to remove the SNAC and replace it with Mosquito, then with some skill and luck you can instant kill HFs and hurt VHFs and Bombers,if you can de-shield them quick (adding like 4 Debs/tizonas) then you can go with 2 nukes for VHF instant-kills.
Mining yes, mind that you can add one mining turret at the back firing slot and you still get the bonus with the normal turrets, I would go with Molly class 5 turrets and deb guns(more of them), SNAC or Mosquito it is up to you.
