I like the idea. However, I think that the minimum range should not be any lower than 12k (or whatever the local chat range is), because right now you can have people speaking to you, and you not being able to see them. It's happened to me. And I was the one with the cloak. So the minimum range should be the same as the maximum local chat range.

How about you make a new piece of equipment on the PoBs. Scanner Booster...or Scanner Upgrade or Long Range Scanner console. Those can be specific to ship types or powercores? Right? So, a Transport/ Miner, with an extra equipment slot on his ship, can have a unit made for him that gives his ship a 25% boost in sensor range. Would something like that work?

The local chat range is based on your scanner.

Unfortunately, you can send based on your scanner, rather than picking it up based on your scanner. I would much prefer the latter.

Here's the kicker.

The code on the server I wrote has it such that it should pick up based on your scanner. It should not be sending based on your scanner.

Yes, I've tried switching it around.

No, it doesn't help.

I like it.

I have to say I agree with this too:

Tactically speaking, as the weaker vessel more dependent on catching enemies.far away.and launching support snubs, you'd think they'd have.more resources devoted to radar than armor or guns, unlike a battleship.

I would swap freighters and VHFs, too.

Ah and for this:

The idea itself aside, how do you suggest we actually implement this?

Unlike equipments such as guns, shields and whatnot, we can't define actual classes for scanners, which means we can't restrict or allow the use of a specific type of scanner on a specific ship class. In other words, this idea can't be implemented the way you're suggesting it, so if have any functional alternative to that in mind, you're more than welcome to share and we'll give it a look.

You (devs) are good at nerfing things, so it would be no problem for you to nerf it to have only 10% power core on ship if you don't have suitable scanner for it.

Lords will rule their land as they see fit, and the serfs shall merely beg.

About the implementation, just use combo by three limitation factors.
First add the scanners into thech nerf plug in if one wants 100% tech nerf in order to fly with other then his shipclass scanner let him do so.
Second use cargo space as limiter, this would fix a lot of issues.Address the issue with traders that are not possible to be pirated because they have scanner with huge range.
Third use high prices as limiter.

that would work.

It would also be good if ships could have scanners as powerful as a ship maybe 2 or 3 tiers above them on the valley chart for LOTS of extra money.

so for example a top of the range LF scanner would cost 50-100 mils, for a HF to have the same scan range as a top of the range LF scanner it would have to spend 250 mils, for a VHF it would have to spend 500-600 mils and for bombers to have the same range as top of the range VHF scanners it would cost 800-900 mils (making it as important as Cap 8) just for that extra piece of situational awareness tech.

tl;dr the further into the valley you are the more money it should cost to get higher up the incline.

of course these are just test figures but you can see how a huge money sink web can be made out of a system like this, the numbers I used are just based on a single "best scanner" there could be several for each class each decreasing in value. some people may agree with it some may not, i do they more of these things need to exist though.

you could have faction specific scanners like Police scanners with a specially long cargo scan range, a system like this would really open the door to a lot more possibilities
