Are you sure you are not Karlotta too?

You don't win an argument by saying "you're wrong" without explaining. If I were trolling, I'd do the above.

Progress here isn't measured by how much credits one earned with a ship....

Background is only one of many factors having an effect on how one's roleplay may continue from that point. The problem with the above two paragraphs I quoted is that with them you imply one's character cannot evolve, cannot be affected by events from outside the reach of the player, predetermined by it's background. This doesn't necessarily have to be this way. While nobody prevents you to have a static and shallow character, neither does anybody force you to roleplay your character that way. Backstory is only a basis to start from, past that point even the entire roleplay can happen in-game only. And it is up to the players themselves to decide where they want to set that starting point, roleplaying a 45 year old war veteran is no worse than roleplaying a 22 year old fresh recruit.

Starting with the crappy ship at the beginning and working your way to a better one provides lots of opportunity for your character's early experiences to determine his ending faction. I don't necessarily have a problem with people starting their character off with a battleship, but it's almost not an option to play the game any other way. Nevertheless, I am starting to think I've misunderstood the kind of game you guys are trying to play. It's not going to stop me from learning to do things they way they are done here.

You guys get the last words. I'll not argue this point any more. See you in space.

Didn't find Karlotta in the wiki. Was this directed at me?

Ive read War and Peace.
I can only suggest you do the same.
Might sound funy, but yes, afterwards you will have better understanding of Nomads, even of the world as a whole.

P.S
And since you brought up the topic of reading,i allow myself to recommend you Anna Karenina, which i personally like much better then War and Peace.

Provides a lot of opportunity, indeed, but that is just one way out of the many to look for opportunities here. Presetting your character doesn't really prevent or forbid you to continue evolving him/her via experiences gained in-game. (Unless your character is a 82 year old dying man, at which point I can't see much room for character evolution either. But I haven't seen anybody do such in this community yet, if not for an auxiliary or "decoration" character for his main one.)

See you in space.
