That's interesting.

After consulting our Archives, I have found no references of LH technology being leased or sold to the Unioners, which is unsurprising since no side has made any effort to bridge the major incompatibilities that exist and cause major efficiency loses. Thus, you are probably referring to technological solutions we are selling on the black market and are 100% compatible with your systems.

So what do you need Mr Frei? Did a Waran break down and you want me to send a technician to help you out?

Sometimes despite our unique intelligence it is very hard for us to understand what you mean. So miscommunications can happen, please don't take this as nothing more than that. I believe you have seen that if I have a problem with you, I will say it directly to your face.

So, from what I understand you are in possession of "LH technology" which you assume we know exactly to what you are referring to. And you are offering to sell this LH technology to the Lane Hackers for free.

Is that correct?

"We see the origins as your own, although you might not see it as belonging to you anymore. About three years ago an MND unit discovered a vessel that appeared, structurally, to have been retrofitted from the Spyglass Mark One clones that your organisation manufactured before the Spyglass device was refined. The MND was going to attempt to break the vessel down. For some reason, they lost interest. Tensions had just started to rise with between Rheinland and the GMG. Given our own analysis of the hull, it is suspected that the fact that the ship had no spyglass array aboard and simply shared a spyglass hull, made the vessel unattractive for anything other than scrap value. What the vessel was responsible for was spewing a large amount of electronic noise - a crude imitation of the Spyglass battleship's original e-war array."

"As far as our records go - and there are few, we only know as much as we do through our old contacts with the Neo-Terrans and the Legion, long turned sour now - the vessel shared enough similarities to the Ragnarok to risk a diplomatic incident should the hulk be discovered by anyone - right down to drive coil elements and some of the less impressive experimental systems - which are simply run-of-the-mill by modern design standards, or otherwise rejected concepts. Internally it was practically junked together. We remain uncertain if the Neo-Terrans were the original owners of the hull, or if it was an early Hellfire Legion project that was, for whatever reason, lost. What we do know is that the vessel is not the Metropolis, and is not an Arbiter refit, for it lacks the Arbiter's naval ram and the various jammers and sensor spikes the Legion clad their modern battleships with, but shares the Arbiters port and starboard rearward hangars."

"As the vessel sat rotting in the naval reserve, information as to the vessel's existence was leaked to us. You may recall we requested spyglass wavelength traces at the time, back under the Garen administration, from Professor Hunter. We had our suspicions about the ship after running into a renewed NTF presence within the Rheinland interior - even as far as Cologne."

"The Hulk had significant reactor reserves and had been running ambivalently for a long period of time. Its... volatile... electronic noise made it stand out prominently from the background radiation. Usually the ship would be written off as useless, but the Unioners were, and are, short on battleships that are under a century old. After about a year of superstitious garbage concerning 'ghost ships', the Unioners eventually deduced the source of the emissives and made a play for it. It was quite probably the most successful heist we've made in the last five years in terms of bulk dry mass obtained at once, even if the total value didn't add together."

"One advantage... perhaps the sole advantage... of a battleship that seemingly was put together in the independent worlds by a cluster of separate parties is that it has been relatively easy to modify with whatever components we have to hand. The ship has won the affectionate nickname 'Siren', due to how impossible she is to hide on the sensor grid, and requires passage through the Puerto Rican rift for her to slip in and out of Rheinland properly, without detection. This reduces her use at home, anywhere other than Cologne, which is filled with natural interference."

"She is, however, very well armed. We've armed her even more formidably than an Arbiter, whilst maintaining the same speed and agility. She was recomissioned to fight superior numbers of Jormungands in adverse conditions; she will perform just as well against her Hellfire Legion sisterships. She has also been clad in technology which is distinctly Unioner in vintage. We have replaced the engines, added secondary thrusters to balance out the additional mass, and an experimental cryocooler under the stern, ballancing the power grid. She is a terrible vessel in every capacity except that as a warship. In Kansas, where there will be nowhere to hide anyway and the Legion will have to meet her on her terms, she will be the vanguard of the distraction force."

"The ship, by now, has been so heavily modified and chopped around that it is the last of the spyglass battleships only in its basic shape. There remains a large number of internal systems aboard the Siren that have otherwise been cut out, left alone, or bypassed, which are arcane to us. Like you say, Professor, there are limits to the compatibility of foreign technologies. Much of this hardware dates back to the Vespucci Triurmivate. There may be data, or hardware, left aboard the ship that might be of value to the Hackers in the coming strike. For all we know there could be code-backdoors within old Legion facilities and assets on the table."

Mr. Frei,

Apologies for the abrupt change of face, but Professor Yoshida has requested I take over this communication for the time being – you may consider me your Professor pro tem, if you will. As one of the only remaining active Lane Hackers that had intimate access to the original Spyglass, and indeed one that was present when it was decommissioned, I’m sure you’ll agree I am more than qualified to handle the matter.

If what you claim to have found truly is a retrofitted Spyglass Mark One, then consider me intrigued. The presence of such a hulk as far afield as Cologne is highly suspicious however, and I am eager to see what information about the vessel's history can be extracted from its hardware that the Unioners have not yet decrypted.

We will of course share any relevant findings with you once the internal systems have been thoroughly investigated.

A sets of eyes, in person, and a healthy look at the vessel's logs, are always the best proof of reality. She is being moved to Fortaleza, Kansas, at the end of the week. We plan to use the rogue stations in the area as a staging ground till more permanent assets can be moved from Kansas."

"As for how the vessel reached cologne, we have our theories. There is a star system, known as Mackenzie, in the independent worlds. It is a cold asteroid disk, much alike Bering, but containing significantly denser rock material and a star of greater lumen. The Unioners used to have our major staging grounds in Mackenzie, till we abandoned the system when stellar drift increasingly disaligned the entry and exit jump anomalies. Mackenzie lead directly between Hudson and Cologne. We know that the Legion was aware of Mackenzie due the nature of our alliance, over twelve years ago now.
