Should he be a merc... well an attack on his trader should count as self defense for him. Rules don't say that right now, but really I think admins would support that.
The point here is the re-engagement rule. Something about entering a system within 4 hours after leaving a combat...
I KNEW this had been asked here before, and discussed.
Here's the Admin answer:
' Wrote:You can always just ask the pirate on your way out of the system if it is ok with him for the escort to accompany the transport back through on a return trip. If the pirate says yes, then there is no problem. If he says no, then he probably just lost an opportunity for piracy. In some circles, that would be called Balance.

If I am on my pirate char, I usually avoid the same people in an amount of time (I don't want to mess with their enjoyment).
I wouldn't mind if I had defeated (destruction not included) an escort, that it comes back. It's just common RP sense, that those what goes may come back.
If it is totally oorp like base camping with a capship or chasing me for no reason, that would disturb my enjoyment of the game.
Agmen, thanks for that; it's helpful. Most pirates I've run into are willing to accommodate a fellow player, as long as the earlier encounter was appropriately RP'd.

In the sake of being hit in a bottleneck system, I think it would be best to reconsider your trade route. Once again, as a captain, your crew's then cargo's safety safety are your primary concern and you wouldn't knowingly put your ship in danger. My $0.02.
Right, but for factions, this isn't always possible. Gateway trades a great deal in Liberty, for instance. There is no reasonable way to and back except through California, where much of Liberty's current pirate activity is. We can't go through Kusari, and we can't go through the embargo into Rheinland.
Quote:For the subject at hand, IF you're going to brave all hell and intentionally fly through known hostile space, it would be pretty pointless to tell your escort, "Sorry man, you ran away last time. You go around while we continue through." I guess I support "It isn't reengaging for escort duty"
