The only real advantage 7 has over XP is native DX10 support. XP can largely emulate DX10, but not everything works yet I think, but atm, you don't really feel any difference between native and emulated DX10 (if you don't mind to do some tweaking before you play a DX10 game). Imo, XP is still the way to go for games (and Ubuntu is fine for everything else, and DARN better than Vista or 7).
Oh, I agree that Ubuntu is better than any Windows. Problem is, WINE doesn't handle FL very well. I can make it run complete with sound, but I can't get online with it, nor can I run FLAM. So, I'm stuck with Windows as my everyday OS.
' Wrote:I'm rather tempted to install the release candidate, I'll admit. I just have a question before I go and do so, though. What stays on your PC when you install the RC? Do you lose all programs and files on your computer, are the files kept, does software need to be reinstalled, etc.
THis may, or may not have been answered but when installing wni7 it gives you an option to have all the old windows files saved in a folder in the root called Windows_Old. THen I went and got what I wanted out of that, and trashed the rest.

Why not multiboot Ubuntu for work and a customized WinXP installation for games? Works quite fine (and most certainly better than 7/Vista or 7-Ubuntu dual boot).
Microsoft advices against installing 7 on a primary home PC. The pc i have now is brand new, so there's not too much i lament losing and has vista pre-installed (Goodbye good old xp, At least is was cheap hmm?). Would I do well to shove it and install 7 anyway?
So far, my experience with 7 has been positive. Not really better than XP, but I'll probably be buying it when it goes final anyway. It's nowhere near the pain in the ass that Vista was, and once this hits the shelves, I look for XP support to fade very fast.
At the moment, I'm running an XP/7 dual boot. XP's mostly sitting there as a backup in case things turn to **** with 7. Once I get the retail version of 7, I'll probably upgrade the XP side, and reinstall Ubuntu where the 7 RC is sitting now.
I find it interesting that I have never had a bad experience with Microsoft products (specifically Vista), although that may just be a result of my brother working for Microsoft.
What I really want to know is...will Freelancer on multiplayer work with Windows 7 and Norton Internet Security?
By the way, I think Windows 7 may be coming out on October 23, 2009.
