Dead man switches? Some poor sap pulls defence duty, so they stick a guy in the platform with enough food and stuff to last him a few days. They tell him to keep his thumbs on the buttons until the onboard computer picks up enemies, at which point he lets go of the switches and the guns go operational. Also, if the platform is destroyed, the switches have still been released, so the neighboring platforms go operational too.
