What if we made alternate forms of transports with the same model (hence the disguise), but with heavier armor, gunboat turret mounts and only 250-1000 cargo space. The idea is that trade corps send this ship through a dangerous zone to lure out enemy pirates while the weaker and more cargo-laden transports sneak by. Obviously, this would require a lot of thinking and planning, but it might be worth it.
Some (possible) objections:
Why can't transports just get escorts?
In an ideal server, some mercs would always be around, but often times traders can't hire help.
This would give them an opportunity to even the playing field with pirates.
Wouldn't this be unfair to pirates, or at least make piracy require several players?
To answer the second part first, safe trading requires multiple players already if the trader hires escorts. Why shouldn't safe pirating require multiple players?
Would it be unfair? Depends on the balance, of course, but these combat transports would be about even (or a little weaker) than a pirate gunboat. Also, the pirate has the advantage of choosing where to set up his ambush.
On top of that, a lot of people are going to stick to the 5k trains, so they'll still be soft targets to pirate.
