i think this is an oversight, cos it means pirates can metagame, cos they know your route, and it also leads to oorp cargos, like luxliners carrying gold.
should gold be sold at varying prices at different bases, just like every other commodity?

No problem is with greedy people using the same fastest route and getting pirated. There are routes you can go with, loosing 15minutes more..but not loosing money or cargo.
Why would it be sold at different bases, we have two now and people only use one...and never learn from mistake over pitiful 1k per unit.
Either way we'll see what will .86 bring us when it comes to trading/mining economy.
Detroit (run by Ageira) is only 5 systems away from Dublin, it takes about 15-17 minutes to get there (without much NPC interference) and it has the highest buying price with a bit over 10k credits.
Ingolstadt Station (a Republican base) is 8 systems away from Dublin, it takes me some 23-27 minutes to finally dock there and sell my gold ore for a bit under 10k credits.
Although it may now look good for Detroit, it's not.
It is in Liberty ... and Liberty has way more pirates than any other house. Maybe you'll lose only some millions to a good RP pirate, but my last (really, this will was my LAST) run to Detroit lead me into the hands of a civilian pirate bomber and a pirate transport who gave me about 10 seconds before they decided to destroy me! And that was just the attack in New York, there are several other trade lanes where this could've happened (California, Magellan, Cortez ...)!
In my opinion, the safest way is the somewhat longer route to Rheinland. There may be some AGS-U who want your money, yeah, but it won't be that much and they'll HAVE the time to talk to you!
It's still up to you but I prefer to sell my gold ore at Ingolstadt Station. It may be a bit less and it took some more time but at least I get my credits!
(Oh, and you won't encounter that many lolwuts all the way from Dublin to Munich by the way ^^)
Omega-7, and the area in front of the Omega 3 jumpgate can be a bit hectic though from time to time on the Ingolstadt route. Short of that it's usually smooth sailing, piracy in the Rheinland core systems is mild in comparison to Liberty and Kusari.
Speaking from experience as a miner who mines all over the place... Easiest route in terms of mining might be the Cobalt one, Omega 7 to Ingolstadt.
