You can either sit here and be negative or you can go and have fun, because there is plenty of it. People just need to learn not to complain at every aspect of the game, then again some do enjoy this place as their personal venting machine - those people I ignore and all is good.
' Wrote:Roleplaying for me is about creativity and freedom. There is little creativity in Discovery, and almost certainly no freedom. At all times you're being watched over by someone with a big stick who will slap you on the wrist if you even attempt to do something creative or different. There comes a point when a creative mind will need to break free of the shackles that are confining it, and that's when roleplaying here gets boring.
Never hit a man with a closed fist, it is, however, on occasion hilarious.
Couldn't've said it better myself. Honestly, it's a rather new thing. Prior to 4.84 (and really mostly to 4.85), the rules were there to encourage fun, not to limit and constrict. It was a roleplaying server about roleplaying, but people understood that roleplaying wasn't about flying the ships people expected you to fly, and certainly wasn't about being forcibly straitjacketed into such. It was about having a character, a unique person in a universe, an individual whose life and times you crafted with the help of the other players on the server. It was a grand spontaneous cooperative story.
These days, it's different. Roleplaying isn't about creative storytelling. It isn't about character and plot. It's about ego-waving and "who can say the most words before killing each other". I know the most common complaint about the Hellfire Legion is that we do not spend two hours every single time we run into a Navy pilot explaining to our blood enemies (who, by the way, we hold responsible for the perceived "downfall" of our home) why we're about to murder them violently, all while they're getting even more reinforcements to outnumber us horribly. It doesn't make sense for our characters to do that - it's purely illogical from a military standpoint - and yet we get huge amounts of flak for not doing it every time, even after we do do it from time to time (with the excuse that "we might be able to save this one", but really because we, as players, actually like to talk to our enemies from time to time rather than making everything a purely military operation, which it would realistically be).
Don't think that because I mentioned HF that this is a specific grievance about that. That's only an example. The point is, we call what we do "roleplaying", when in reality, if that's what it is, it's the worst roleplaying in the history of mankind. It's simply not about playing a role; that's a facade we put over it. We pile on rules, restrictions, complaints, whining, heaps of "balancing", hours upon hours of grinding just to play the game at all, and we call all of that "roleplaying" and vilify anyone who objects to it. We scream for even more of this, and of the illogical chatter, even while the act of actually playing a role of a character becomes more and more rare.
Even when we do get true roleplaying, it is rarely for the sake of actually storytelling so much as for the sake of playing a character who gets to play out the player's fantasies (which very greatly in creepiness). Oftentimes, the latter totally ignores the existing world they have to build their story in, and, when we object, we're told we're intolerant. Sometimes, these story-breaking characters even exist solely to break the story. Regardless of their origin, however, they almost always constantly, violently call attention to themselves, shattering willing suspension of disbelief and changing any immersion we might be able to get in this environment into disgust.
Short version: We now have more restrictions, less roleplaying, what you are so disgusted with that you think is roleplaying is not actually roleplaying, but a facsimile, and even what little "roleplaying" there is isn't actually about storytelling. The few true roleplayers remaining mostly stay because of characters or faction loyalty, not because of any loyalty to Discovery or special enjoyment thereof over any other roleplaying medium.
It's childish to log on server with a "meh" feeling and expect to have a good time. Last time I did so I ended up being just seconds away from ragedeleting all my accounts.
If you feel that what you are doing is not worth your time, hit Alt-F4 and come back later.

I look back at my old posts and just...
Is it just me or is RP kinda....childish? Does it not remind you of two fat guys with thick glasses blabbing about DnD or Star Wars or somesuch?
I kinda came to a conclusion, that any multiplayer game is as good as the people you play it with. I have around 4 good people I enjoy the game with, but as I see it now, it is just more fun to fly around with them, killing people.
So am I just going through a phase, or have I completely stopped giving two stroodles? Or is this a pre-leaving thread?
Durdaderpy derp.
Spazzy, or anyone else who wants, can you check this with yes or not, or with 0-5 (0 not at all, 1 very rarely, 2 rarely, 3 I don't know, 4 often, 5 too often, 6 almost everytime)

Neglecting someone else's ingame rp needs
Ingame friends are completely dismissed
Cynicism and aggression become apparent towards another player
Withdrawal, reducing rp contacts to a minimum
Behavioral changes become obvious to others
FL becomes a series of mechanical functions
Inner emptiness while playing FL
Don't feel need to start the game at all
I feel ran down and drained
I find that I am prone to negative thinking about FL or community
I find myself getting easily irritated by small interaction inrp
I have a "don't care" attitude
I feel that I am achieving less than I should
