I use Avira Free Antivirus for like 3 years now and I NEVER had a single issue with it:DIt also works perfectly for older machines like mine(almost 7 years old)
I don't even feel like I have a anti virus at all meanwhile it did it's job perfectly !
The good old NOD 32/ESET serves me on several PCs more then 5-7 years without any problem. If you need help with getting the codes PM me.

Use your brain. Is the best virus protection out there and frankly I prefer it over bloatware that costs money.
Malwarebytes Antimalware is nice for the occasional scan, and if you screw up too badly system restore usually does the trick, easy enough to do in safemode.
But again just use your brain instead of clogging up your computer with background programs.
First of all, run screaming from AVG. It's not Norton or anything, but it's still a pain to deal with.
Second, you'll quickly learn that the best AVs are free, surprisingly. Not sure why that is, but it tends to be the case.
Now.
Avast! is decent, yeah, but it tends to get a lot of false detections. Including key windows files. I wouldn't use it, not because it's bad, but because there's so much better.
Avira's pretty good. Really, though, the best I personally have experience with right now is Windows Security Essentials. It's actually very good - better than almost any others, including even Avira. Makes sense, too, if you think about it; Microsoft has a vested interest in getting Windows a reputation for security, and can afford to spend a lot of money to do so.
Other people have mentioned Comodo. I've heard good things about that, but I haven't read any reviews on it, much less used it myself, and really don't know anything about it short of hearsay. So I can't help you there.
And yes, as Tycho mentioned, if you do get something, there's nothing like MalwareBytes to get rid of it. That thing can save even some of the most far-gone computers (to the point where you have to boot from the DVD and run MalwareBytes off a thumb drive to clean the whole system, followed by the thumb drive). It's stupendous.
