BBC News: Port Jackson hosts Parliamentary elections

09/11/819 - Port Jackson - The results of Port Jackson's first general elections to the House of Commons have been concluded. After a the polls closed at 8pm, the counting teams who turned out for the event endured a tense night of checking and cross-referencing results. Late opinion polls revealed that the local Royalist contender George Stirling had a considerable lead over his closest rival, Federalist candidate Abbey Hopper. As the first of Omega 49's dual suns began to light the distant horizon, it was revealed that Mr Stirling had in fact won the Port Jackson seat for the reds, with a landslide victory.

Initial statistics show that of the eligible voting population of roughly 100,000 citizens, almost 65% turned out to cast their ballot. Of this vote, a decisive 72% were cast for the Royalist party, 21% for the Federalist Party and 7% for other assorted minor and local parties. The Federalist candidate, Mrs Hopper, has already given a statement blaming "the systematic and outrageous partisan support and funding of the Royalist cause by the Bowex Colonial Authority and local government" for her defeat at the ballots. Anonymous sources within the Royalist party have claimed this is just an example of "poor sportsmanship on Ms Hopper's behalf". Despite this, the Chairman of the Port Jackson Regional Assembly has promised an enquiry into the matter.

It is believed that Mr Stirling's promises for renewed expansion and increased core-world support for Port Jackson's situation may have been the defining successful characteristic of his campaign. In an announcement to the Port Jackson Royalists and the BBC, he announced that this victory made him feel "Exuberant: this is a landmark victory for the Bretonian Royalists." He continued with a rallying speech, culumnating with the declaration that, "Repeatedly and consistently the Bretonian's right to expand for his or her own pleasure and neccesity has been sidelined by what my peers have come call 'internal threats'. My victory in this election has given the party fair grounds to return Bretonian values to Planet Sydney and wipe clean such nonsense from the public mind."

In an uncharacteristically early out-of-hours session, members of the Port Jackson Regional Assembly have expressed their congratulations to Mr Stirling, through an address by Royalist Chairman Arthur Saunders. A meeting with the Regional Assembly is due to take place tomorrow. It is believed that Planetary Governor Sir James Hewitt will also brief the new MP on his duties before he departs.

Mr Stirling is due to depart shortly for New London, where he will be taking up his position in the House of Commons at New Westminster Palace.
