I was looking around for this and could not find an answer so I thought I would ask. I know taking bribes can lower your rep with other factions, but what about doing missions? I figured doing missions for Kusari would decrease my rep for Bretonia, but I am now in the green with them and my Rep with Bretonia did not seem to go down at all. I tried the same thing for Rineland and Liberty. I am now Green with all 4 of them. As a freelancer, this is a great thing! I am now wondering if I can do the same thing and go green with Gallia too. If I do missions for them to build up my rep, does anyone know if it will hurt my Rep elsewhere? What about signing up on the bounty board but only going after their Criminals? No military targets?
On a side note, After doing missions for a few days, I have learned how hard they are. I thought I just sucked at it, but looking around, it seems everyone agrees they are hard. So, what level missions can you guys do normally? In a Raven's Talon I usually take missions in the low 20's difficulty range that pay out around 3-4 hundred thousand, but they are touch and go with me only succeding aobut 70% of the time. I just assumed that this was supposed to be an easy feat and I just needed more skill, but after looking around, maybe I'm better than I thought... or at least... not quiet as bad
With a Freelancer ID you can indeed get almost every faction Green by taking bribes/shooting NPCs/taking missions. When your rep for one group increases their enemies rep may go down, but not nearly as much as the one you're repping goes up.
And as for signing up for all houses bounty boards, yes you can so long as they let you AND you don't shoot their NPC faction while collecting on another board. (eg: you can sign up for BAF and GRN boards, but don't shoot BAF or GRN ID'd ships while you're at it.)

Well, how rep works is decided by empathy values associated with a whole bunch of factors. Missions do affect your rep, but the people you're taking them against affects it more. Here's a real example:
As a Corsair, you could take missions against the Bounty Hunter's Guild. Successfully completing the mission would raise your rep with Corsairs, which would subsequently lower your rep with the Outcasts by a small value. However, because you'd be fighting the BHG (a mutual enemy of both factions), the net result would be that the Outcasts became slightly more friendly.
Because of that, missions where you have to kill an enemy base without tackling the fighters are probably the best for fixing rep if you don't want to piss off other groups too much. One faction that will help you get your rep to neutral/friendly with just about everyone would be the Xenos.
Becoming friendly with Gallia (especially by shooting The Council) would decrease your rep with the royalists' enemies, primarily Bretonia. If you just shot Outcasts NPCs all day (without missions), that should increase your Gallic rep while preserving your other house lawfuls.
If you just want to hunt on bounty boards, remember that player ships don't affect your rep (which can be good).
As for the missions, I can finish those sort of missions although sometimes take some damage. Maybe try the 200k missions. Alternatively, just go for the "base destroy" missions that don't specify you having to kill all the fighters too, you can cruise in and out of those at most difficulties.
Basically how it works:
When you do something that changes your rep to a faction, either up or down (by succeeding a mission or taking a bribe to raise it, or destroying ships to lower it) something called "empathy" triggers, which automatically raises/lowers your reputation for a number of other set factions. This is set by the devs. Don't ask for the going rates - there are 10100 entries. If you want to investigate yourself, the data is in \freelancer\data\missions\empathy.ini, and should be pretty selfexplanatory. Empathy doesn't chain-trigger, IE if you complete a mission for the LPI, it will raise your reputation with the BHG, but that raising of the BHG rep by empathy won't lower, for instance, your rep with the Red Hessians.

If you kill a guy on a mission, it triggers the empathy the same as non-mission kills. So if you take a mission that says "kill all the outcasts" you will get the rep boost from the mission AND you will get rep boosts everytime you kill an outcast. You can get gree to most houses by killing a whole bunch of Corsairs and Outcasts. You can get good rep to a lot of factions just by killing Xenos. If you dont want to lower rep with anybody, just take base-destroy missions and dont kill anything, and you will only get the positive rep from the mission.
Another thing is you need to be aware of rep-ninja settings on the IDs. The faction IDs all have enemy factions, and there are limits on maximum reputation to those enemy factions which get applied whenever you undock from a base. EG, you can go buy a bribe for an enemy, but as soon as you undoc it will be back to red. Freelancer doesnt have any repninja but all the faction IDs have them.
I have one ship that is neutral white with all of the open faction, and some of my BHG ships are greeen/red polarity with only a couple of neutral whites.

For some reason, i have yet to see that happen... whenever i kill BHG's in alpha, i always get same rep as doing a base destruction or assassination mission. I somehow doubt your statment is true due to the fact that over the course of 4000+ OC missions (i missionwhore to raise money) iv'e done, this still hasnt happened. Be it by empathy towards other factions or direct OC/OCG rep
That explains a lot, thanks guys! I've been exploring Gallic areas looking for destroy the base missions.... or really any mission that is not "Attack 6 gunboats". I am starting to think all of their missions are designed for capital ships... maybe I should just hunt Outcast NPCs
