Now that there are more barges out there and once .86 comes out there will be more player controlled stations, I think it's time to make this ship more useful - In a creative way.
Changes:
Making it a lot slower, possibly as slow as the Barge itself, would be the sacrifice. The trade-off would be a huge increase in cargo. I'm thinking about 9,000 or 10,000. The only other possible changes I could think of that would make it more useful would be more nanobots and shield-batteries and maybe allowing it to carry cargo pods.
Justification:
These changes would put a -real- use to this ship and grant it the fate that it has been created to do. Slowing it down would make sure that the cargo is not abused.
Please read the infocard: This ship isn't meant to carry large amounts of cargo, it's meant to be able to make the trip between space and planetside. If anything is to be changed, the Heavy Lifter ship should be able to quickdock directly with a planet, anywhere on the planet. I suggested that it be an option for a player-owned station orbiting an unsettled planet in 4.86 since it is able to move freighters and fighters as a sort of "ship-shuttle" also.
It is indeed, a cool idea. I'm all for it, but I do agree that 9,000 is too much for a transport that small... and cheap.
As for the info card, they can be changed, and giving transport a unique job in the new mod is something I want to see. Maybe having the cargo 4,500, and the ship more expensive, but also adding a bonus when a shipment has been made.

Look, the ship already has a unique job inRP, it just hasn't been implemented in the mod yet. We already have a kajillion 4k-5k transports. There's no way any ship can have powerful enough engines to stay in a planet's gravity well for hours with 4.5k cargo.
As a side note, if you thrust full speed and catch a fighter or freighter in between the 4 "teeth" of the front part of the ship, you can trap it and ram it to death in less than 10 seconds, armor be damned.

I gota try that :D
Well the first idea is also good, increas cargo space with the help of pods and slow its speed, to be a loading ship for the barge, and not for trade between systems.
well it would make an entire new ship class with that change, or just stick the pods in its teeth.
Make it a dockable ship (only for snubs) and let it dock on any planet. And then implement another game (SW:Battlefront 2 or Battlefield 2142) so that we can have planetside pew pew.... with tanks, walkers and all that.

Discuss away!
Everything's already been said. It doesn't need changing.
The only thing might be to increase the cargo capacity up to 1000 units, and change the price accordingly - just to make transferring cargo easier.
