Coming to 4.86 after being active in 4.85 was a slap in the mouth. Nomads in 4.85 were literally brown your pants crazy as far as how hard they were going to SHRED you if you went at them alone. GOOD.
Do I believe nomad fleets should be all over? No. But I feel that the nomad is a faster, more evolved, higher power life form. The best part, they were low in numbers (Always) but so damn strong. Remember the marduk from vanilla? It absolutely wrecked.
The morphs, even with no shields, they HURT.
The feeling I get now is "oooh boy, some mind control RP and then they run because they're gonna get ganked"
I mean, I dunno. My view of the nomads was always a silent terror. Some nomad comes up, roll the dice, maybe he wants your cargo for study. maybe he wants your corpse. Or just you, in pieces.
The caps nomies get are a joke, due to size and speed. They literally are so much bigger than sirian vessels that in the hands of NPC's they're murderous, in players, lulzerous.
I feel the nomad fighters should be boosted to be honest. As well as the guns. It should be DAMN scary to come under the gun. In that regard, a closed faction is ALWAYS preferred. Opening the nomads to (RP) was a fail move. I support nomad trials ALWAYS being available. Indy nomads are needed for new blood and can learn. But nomad status? Always closed, always alpha class.
Alpha class needed to make RP meaningful in freelancer. Without it, an absolute balance occurs, with no real 'meaningful' source of fear.
Why be afraid of aliens when your house military is 1billion times more powerful due to numbers. Be afraid because a nomad going into a 6v1 furball (1 being the nomad) he might just win.
Does it piss people off? yes Does it make for some lulzy moments? yes. But it also makes for some awesome alliances. You see things like the rogues and navy fighting together (Before vaping each other) though they won't announce it. They focus the nomad, because he is the threat.
And that one threat, that lone nomad player in the OP ship, that player is creating more interaction and RP than 10 newark campers.
I think a lot of people are discounting their own growth over time in pvp skill.
I've noticed this in my stints of coming back to disco over and over, for years.
People who start disco, even from another server, have a learning curve. Its actually quite a long learning curve to get to be near the top (and most people who join this server as great pilots are actually people who've made a new account...I've known more than a few)
While I'm not saying nomads didn't get a nerf, I am saying that, in 84 and 85, I fought nomads, and didn't have the experience of absolute fear of 1 on 1s...unless I was fighting, for example, Virus. After jumping out and in, I found the game much harder to fly in, and not just because I lost my skills, but because the community as a whole is progressing, learning tricks in meta and passing them around, and players get better.
Just a thought, but alongside the new balance, have you considered that the skill differential between the nomads (who have often been fairly experienced players, based on their demands for high rp skills) and all the rest?
Here's a list of reasons of why nomad tech is not overpowered:
-The LF cruises at 350. Cruising at 400 is the special thing about LFs. Also, it has 3 guns, and while they are class 10, class means nothing, class 9 are as good as class 10, and nomads can't use codenames.
-The VHF is a flying brick. As agile as a small gunboat, and with the hitbox of one, it's bunch of guns serves as nothing if you can't hit with them.
-There are no Anti-shield Nomad Guns, neither for fighters nor for bombers.
-I personally like both the GB and Cruiser, but they are indeed huge.
-The Marduk has no anti-shield guns either, and has no kind of missile. However, if you are able to keep yourself close from the enemy, it's a beast.

That particular Scorpion was a SRP, so it cost 500m plus ship and equipment costs.

Adad bomber - bog standard light bomber. People like to rant and rave about it being brilliant, but frankly, it just lobs antimatter at stuff, like all other bombers. In a word, boring.
Assassin - Heap of crap. Fat, slow, rolls strangely, no contrails. Nasty thing to fly. not overpowered. Infact I'd say it's horribly underpowered.
Light fighter - Rather overpowered
I don't really do caps (or rather, I've not flown the GB and Irra...), so I won't talk about the rest. I've heard that the cruiser is OP... But as for small ships, nomad gear is pretty ordinary.
Their capital weaponry and standard guns are a grade above standard Sirian stuff at a glance. Haven't flown the Nomships, haven't encountered Noms either other then occasional packs of Scorpions in 4.85, which were horribly overpowered due to their weapons having cruiser stats, while the hitbox was only half the size of the ship due to it never having been set properly. As a result craft of that type could even solo battleboats if flown with a bit of finesse.
Both those issues were solved, and the murdersauce craft users now find themselves with a heavy 8-turret gunboat that have slightly higher powered weapons, and a hitbox that is sized to the craft. Which means the thing is now able to be defeated by a few bombers.
Nom capital ships remain significantly more powerful then their standard counterparts, but they're fewer in numbers and have few places they can dock, limiting their usefulness. I'd not mind opening them up to indies with the stipulation that they stick to the Omicrons - should give Core and Order players something with some fangs to pew. 'Though I do suspect that will lead to purple sieges of Crete from time to time.
Igiss: If you felt the lack of contrails on the Assasin was a drawback on that ship, why not post it as a bug? Quite easy to fix by adding a hardpoint or two.

Sorry... who?
Yes, fighters need contrails. They help to determine relative speed and turn rate as well as direction, in relation to that which is around you.
