Other than the stated "this will stop 'nice' metagaming that breeds interaction between few players in a large universe" argument, both are pretty essential for violations and sanctions. It's a lot easier to let the admins know if you are underlevel with a screen of said number (rather than faffing about with more Recruit ID rules), or which system you are in rather than "generic asteroid field type III". Particularly when you aren't actually in the same system as someone who is in a system they are PvP-dead in, or shouldn't be in by ID (in the case of Nomads, these days).

The advantages are making the game feel less fake and be more immersive. I still think a region-based and not pin-point accurate player list would be better.

I don't like that I, as a trader, can look on the player list while hauling Silver Ore from Humboldt, and know that there are no players in California (and thus know it's safe to go there). Removes the need for a scout. Yes, I could "not do this", but.. yeah, nobody holds back here.

Not knowing what's around the corner as lawful, unlawful or something in between is much more fun, in my opinion.

Frankly I don't think the argument of "people only log in when they see something on the player list" is valid: at its core, that practice also CAUSES inactivity. "Why log my [KNF] when I know there is nothing in Kusari at the moment anyways?", "Why log my Iseijin or Blood Dragon when I know there is no [KNF] anyways?".

If both sides are waiting for the other to log on, in the end, nobody actually logs on.

I see where you're coming from, Haste, although I would argue that the chat list isn't pin-point accurate. And I might be inclined to agree with you if the actual Disco universe was smaller. As it stands now...you could very well log and never EVER see another player if you simply log in the wrong spot.

Sort of agree but it should be expanded upon. Communication should match lack of player info.

On the recruit thing, level will always be on the hitbox so you'd know when encountering a ship [you may plan to attack] and can plainly see their level and ID before firing.

So seeing level may not be important over the inter-system chat, lcoation probably is though, again, for population reasons. it might help stimulate RP in a way. Sometimes you'll ignore one char over another due to their level being much higher or lower than your own. Without that you must take the risk that who you encounter could very well be higher than you, or far lower.

But since we're on the topic of the chat screen, I always thought the idea of just being able to PM anyone in game at anytime was a bad idea.

You should only be able to PM someone in another system if they're in a base, like a 'long range' transmission, which only a base tranceiver could send. Other than that, you would only be able to use system and local chat to communicate (and axe group chat, all transmissions should be able to be incercepted), which means radio silence is golden when tactically necessary.

This way if you want to message someone 5 systems away for whatever reason you have to hit a base and /pm them, especially if they're in space, they won't get the message until they dock again (mail waiting at nearest access point to the 'network'). If they're in a base you could then get direct comms with them from afar. I wouldnt be opposed to limits on distance for that either.

This way if you want to communicate in bases go for it, to PM someone for oorp whatever or just want to send someone info, ask questions, etc.

But if you want to collaborate, meet to discuss trades or whatever, you'd actually have to MEET in space. Meetings could be spied upon, ambushed, and actually need 'secret locations'. It would get even more interesting if we no longer allowed swapping equipment in Conneticut and made people actually have to meet in space somewhere to trade.

That's an interesting idea...

Would make tactical chatter in-game difficult in large combat areas...as the enemy would be able to intercept your communiques.... wouldn't this just drive everyone to using Team Speak?

Role play them as long range scanners. They show an energy signature in a system, show you how big it is. You don't know where it is and what ship type until you have them in low range scanner. If you get even closer you can scan the ship cargo and equipment.

I think it's actually a pretty good system.

Ye. 100 systems. 100 players. Activity can be everywhere, so the player list helps.
It's not really very immersive and does not feel very irp if you do a cat&mouse game against someone who logs ship after ship in your path, but it is a game and it is a challenge. As long as everybody can use it, I don't even see a fairness problem.

So: no. It's fine as it is.
