But something must be done. I am of the opinion that it should be sooner rather than later, but I am also of the opinion that this should be the first way we try. Which, admittedly, we have been trying for a long time, but its better than being draconian about it.
People gravitate towards "Corsairs" because its a cool name, and because they most resemble the traditional pirate (Bearded, eye patched, wooden leg, parrot talking guy with a rusty sword). At least, thats what made me buy a Titan in Single Player.
Yeah, I think that people go for the Corsairs because they hear that there's two big pirate groups: the Corsair alliance, and the Outcast alliance. The Corsairs are your archetypal pirate. They go out, they find some juicy traders, they grab those traders' stuff, and run. They have some food shortages, they have an alliance with the Order. The Outcasts, on the other hand, appear more as druggies/drug lords, something which people might have more trouble identifying with or role playing as.
I think it is plainly because of original single player, the readme and the original Freelancer multiplayer servers.
In single player, the Titan is king at nuking nomads and whatnot after you have finished the campaign.
Also, in the readme, most of the corsair ships show up as having some of the best armoured and bot/bat heavy ships. Since agility isn't included in these basic stats, you get people flocking to these big ships.
Finally, from my experience of the starting FL servers, it was Corsairs and Liberty navy fighting each other. In Eagles. With Nomad weapons. Nothing else, but that. Constant fighting with exactly the same ships.
Getting people to RP is fine, except if you have noticed, many of the Corsairs in Gamma that do not RP are actually in their own little "factions," and throughly refuse to join the forums or RP at all...
Take [TT], for example. They have been here for several months. No forum involvement, barely any to no RP whatsoever.
Try converting those people, Laowai....Times have changed. It's not like we can convert every single person anymore. Half the people on the server in one day are not even registered on the forums.
If you want me to adopt a nice little RP-Fostering attitude, let's get these players on the forums, eh?

I think a nice Rp'ing attitude, especially to English speakers, is much better than a hardcore one that alienates people.... but that aside... ive been online almost every night (china time) for the last last 2 weeks and haven't seen a TT vessel in that whole time.... some of these "mini factions" seem to be flashes in the pan... and they dont last.... Try getting these people to RP? I mean no disrespect but how many of you have actually tried??? speaking from my own limited experience, whenever i have pulled someone up in Gamma, given them tips and helped them, they have been more than willing to listen, respond and change what they were doing. I'm sure some people don't, as i said i acknowledge the fact that there are some bad eggs... but i seriously think that a lot of this is being blown out of proportion and is being carried along by Hype...
Another reason why i think a lot of people dont join the forums and RP is that they are not native English speakers..... Now i know this is a side issue, but i personally think its a huge one in terms of RP and server attitude.... i suspect personally, and i dont know if I'm right, that many of the TT people were not English speakers..
In this regard the community needs to get a little real and stop whining.... this is an English speaking server, but we have a lot of people online with us who dont speak English, or if they do, their English is rudimentary at best ( I feel im qualified to say this as i have been a TEFL teacher for the last 3 years)
... i suspect that the issue of RP some times is less that they wont do it, but more that they can't. So, the community needs to have a hard and fast policy on how it deals with non English speakers. Because if we are accepting them into our community (and im not saying yes or no to this) then we will as a community need to accept that role play screw ups are gonna happen, because these people dont speak our language. They are NOT going to join the forums unless they feel confident enough with their English because they simply don't understand what is being said.
My personal opinion is that we should be mentoring new players into Role play if they mess up - and i have on my own steam been doing this in Gamma with my Corsair Character - but it is limited when the person at the other end of the chat doesn't speak your language. Now... in my opinion, we as a community are faced with a choice:
We accept non English speakers as part of the Discovery community, which means that many people here need to shut the hell up and realise that RP mess ups will happen because Joe Blogs simply doesn't understand what you're telling him - OR we need to exclude them from our community with a multi-lingual disclaimer that essentially says : "This is an English speaking server ONLY, if you do not speak English you Will find playing the game very difficult" - this is a practical communicative issue that i face everyday professionally - you simply cannot have it both ways people.
On top of that, my original whinge still stands... for the English speakers out there - people need to calm down and stop telling people how to RP- So what that there are a bunch of Gunships and a cruiser hanging around Crete - Here's a RP reason for you:
It;s the Corsairs Home system........ so read between the lines.
I have been a part of the community now since December - so all of 3 months. I have honestly completly enjoyed my time here and intend to stay for the duration. But really... a lot of people need to just get on with their own game and stop telling other people how to play theirs.

You cannot imagine how true you are. How hard i try, i will never be able to RP the way i want and i know i can because of the communicative issue. But I try and I don't care about my grammar. Being in char is in our head. Thus we cannot say who are "RP" who are not. But we can see who read the rules and respect them.
That?s the reason for me, a offline-reallife Hessian from Germany, to have my Ger <-> Eng translationhomepage opened all the time, if there are a few phrases i do not understand. :D
ok.. my english in school was a B... german only a D ^^ the teachers fault ^^:)
I agree with laowai. For example i weekly get 5-8 private comm messages asking am i norse, russian, or something else simply because i use names and surnames you find in our world(a courtesy much players forget, or dont care about) also those messages are in swedish, norwegian or russian written in cyrilic.(thank god i have simplistic understanding of languages and know cyrilic)
Those players have mostly awfull english speaking skills. Also most are lost and unable to find their way around. Naturally for them to find someone they can talk in home language to get their bearings.
Also, i flown for corsairs for month or two. Yes, there is always at least one corsair in orbit of Crete. Why is so? Because many players are convinced that corsiars are biggest pirate faction(they are), have most armor on ships(yes they do, titan is awesome ship), even awesome weapons(why would otherwise every 4th sanction thread be about noncorsair using corsair weapons)
Seeing that, no wonder new players go there. As for oorp, look, most of us are able to roleplay all time they are on. Others are not. Yes this is not a chat room, and yes this is a roleplay server(and it is best ive found), and yes we have rules about it. But, players get carried away. I know if i really have wish to ooc talk, i will group or use private comms wtih player. But new dudes dont know that.
Maybe players should be less jumpy about it. Private nubi, tell him what is he doing wrong, and what should he probably do, not how he should roleplay, but explain what roleplay is. In my 3-4 months on disco, ive seen many who are not even aware what term roleplay means. Dont forget, we all started in that tinfoil junk of starflea, and we did not know as much as now. Yes, some came with roleplay expirience from before, like me, but still took me month to get my way around, and find who, where, when and why.
I've been a Corsair pilot for a while (Mal) and while yes I'm guilty of spending some time in Crete's orbit, I'm not there 24/7. I've been sighted in Rhineland, Liberty, Bretonia and even Kusari systems this weekend alone.
The duels happen so we get better at fighting, so when a real threat enters our home systems, we will be victorious.
