Single player campaign disagrees with you. You can bring down battleships without a battleship. Bombers and cruisers will be able to do the job just fine. Gunboats as fire support against smaller ships is also an option.

Zoners are useful to the Corsairs/Outcasts, thus the Freeports haven't been a realistic target for a takeover. Through their relations, Zoners can get material for example that Outcasts/Corsairs would have a harder time getting. As long as the Zoners are of use for the local factions, there is no reason for them to take the base over.
Incase of a hostile attacks, the small zoner community amongst a freeport is too small to effectively stand against a full scale attack. They rely on their usefullness towards others.
Imagine the Zoners on FP10 would suddenly rebel against the Outcasts, blocking their dock access, stop shipments to Outcasts. The base would be destroyed or taken over within a week, if the Zoners are lucky.

Yeah, but the singleplayer campaign is ridiculous. The battleships don't have shields and Trent single-handedly destroys, what, a dozen of them? Sometimes more than one at a time? Come on man. No nation in their right mind would build such a large, slow, vulnerable battle-pinata.

Also, if the suggested stats are going to be final, the new 'transports' will be murder machines.
The Zoners have also traditionally harbored those nation's enemies. They would be better served kicking the Zoners/BH/other pirates out, operating the stations and biodomes themselves, and raiding out of their newly acquired base. On top of this, there have been plenty of fiascos in the past that surely would have incensed them into taking those bases over, even if it wasn't really to their advantage. They're kind of cranky people.
Except that Trent has plenty of wingmates and exploits the vulnerabilities of the battleships at the time. Now we have more advanced shield technology, but we also have more advanced technology against capital ships. Kinda balances each other out.
Lore, obviously.
Just because a gunboat has 600 cargo hold and is agile doesn't make it a freighter, as it's intended purpose is much more.
If a player chooses to use it as a battleship or a heavily armored cargo ship, it's their choice, but just because some use it that way does not make it a battleship or a cargo ship.

Why were the Zoners given a battleship in the 1st place then?
Because it was a mistake. Zoners were never meant to have militaristic battleships, only things that were relevant to the Zoner RP and lore. The Neph and Aquillion were only added to the zoner shipline because devs though "lol, caps are cool, lets give them to zoners too".
And finally, the devs have come to their senses and are purging the zoner shipline of it's capitals, in favor of more lore relevant transports.
And that still isn't a valid argument as to why zoners can't use bombers and gunboats for defense instead using battleships.
that's no moon, it's a trap the zoners got caps cos of jinx, and i've seen nothing to suggest that this isn't jinx trying to get the models back

seriously? look at my sig. SP campaign completed in a fricking flea. don't tell me nothing from nothing that this is vanilla. vanilla gives us the lore, but not the mechanics
@Coin - the zoners got the cap from igiss ( CIS star frigate ) - read things up before you try to state facts. and there is nothing about "getting the models back" as the model was put into the mod when igiss had a very precise policy about submitted model ( which you probably know nothing about but still assume too much )
but since you only seem to read and take in what you WANT to read - it won t make sense to repeat over and over again how things got where they are today. - as it was said dozens of times - and yet you seem not to know about them. kinda sad for a '08 join date.

I didn't know that all your wingmates and most NPCs in the campaign flew Starfliers in disguise. You learn something new every day, I guess?
If he were to go on this adventure all by himself, the campaign wouldn't last long.
