Pretty much impossible. I mean, it is possible, just like anything else is, but it is extremely time consuming.
And once you set it, you loose the right to shoot any NPC's around, because it will ruin your hard work.
That's why it's good to have Train CD around.
This is indeed a complication, and one that my program wouldn't really solve. You'd have a clean reputation sheet, but you'd be free to screw it up until the next time the program was run. As I was working on it, one of the guys using the "flaming cross" avatar (shame on you for all using the same one) suggested that the way the reputation is affected by killing NPCs got changed as well (actually he just proposed that, since he didn't know about the work I was doing). I think that his suggestion plus this thing I'm working on would solve this issue for good. New characters would have to wait for the next time the program was run, but that shouldn't take much time (again, there's no way saying this for sure without knowing).
Another thing I could do on the same lines would be an admin visual application to help access and correct character files' reputations. But, even though I'd be able to use a lot of what I've already done, that would be an entirely different thing and would require addressing some other issues, like remote file access and other complicated stuff I'd rather not. I think a simple automatic triggered program is a better solution.
500 million would be worth my while just to get a goddamn Freelancer tag without having to go so god damn far OORP that it isnt funny...or easy...Try getting a Freealancer tag by JUST killing Zoner Guards....in a fighter.
While being quite funny, your sig was the biggest one i've ever seen so far. No more than 700x250 please. ~utrack http://pastebin.com/SYQXBufs
I am all for this script... I gave up a long time ago trying to fix my lawfuls simply because of how oorp it would be to kill the right ones.... Imagine a Lib Assault frig with a gaian tag killing corsairs in Britonia so when the next rep jump happens it doesn't get even worst. All I need is to go from police to navy. It was pretty bad when I was doing my tour of sirius in the Varyag fixing my rep.... I was appologizing a lot. I have a freelancer in a claw with a corsair tag docked at Houston right now that I have been fighting for about a week to get right.
Sometimes you almost invite a sanction just to clear things up.
I posted in a thread a few days ago about something like this, only i suggested it be tied to the purchasing of an ID. This way when a person buys the Id they become friendly or hostile to the right people, this also takes it out of admin hands and makes it part of the game mechanics.
Example: Buying a Corsair ID makes all factions hostile that are supposed to be and makes you super friendly with Corsairs and auto-sets your tag accordingly.
If some reason your factions are getting out of balance all one would need to do is rebuy the ID and presto it's fixed again. Only by killing your "own" or getting a HUGE bribe would you be able to change it drastically enough to switch factions. Then raise the price of ID's.
Pro's:
1. People no longer have an easy "excuse" to be somewhere they shouldnt be.
2. Admins won't have to deal with changing reputations directly.
3. It forces better RP.
4. Makes it harder for players to "faction hop" to get the specific maps or equipment they want.
Con's:
1. I don't know if it's even possible to link a rep change to making a purchase. (same code as buying a bribe maybe. only altered to work with Id's.)
2. Hmm, well i can't really think of any major probs this could cause. But im sure others can so fire away. :P
Having the game change your reputation instantly upon the purchase of a commodity isn't something the game was programmed to do. The closest to this we'd have are the bribes, but I'm inclined to believe they aren't programmable to do much else they already do. Anyway, having the purchase of an ID instantly fix your reputation would demand hard coding reprogramming. It would be sweet and ideal since all the hard work would be done in parts (as people bought/mount their IDs), but I don't think it's something feasible, at least not easily.
Well i never thought it would be "easy" in the first place. I'm no "pro" modder but i have played with the ini's and scripts alot and i think it would at the very least be worth exploring the possibility. If nothing else i would think the effectiveness of bribes could be raised to accomplish nearly the same thing.
Exp: Buy a bribe and you become so friendly to the people you bought the bribe from that all the right factions would instantly become red to you.
well it seems pretty easy to do a name change so howcome it isnt as easy to do a rep one? i really need to sort out my reputation with a few factions but it would require me sitting in my Albatross going through ALOT of asteroid fields with out cruise for a long long time (with cruise it tends to make it bounce around like a ping pong ball in a pinball machine)
make it about 300mil though so the admins wont be flooded with requests as you cannot get 300mil with one trade route and would take a while getting it plus it wouldent have to be done straight away, do it at the same time as the name changes are done:)
i am all for something like this as it would help alot with RP
Waaaaay to much work for the admins for them to go around mucking about with people's reps. A script on the ID would be nice (Freelancer tags! Woohoo!), but may not be something we can do. The system whereby you change the reps based on ID during system maintenance might work, but may take a long time. I don't think we really need any new system by which you can change your rep, but it might be nice for some of the tricky factions.

Let me answer that question. When changing a players name there is one thing to edit... the name. When "fixing" a rep there are what, all-in-all, 40 or so different factions. Thats a lot of sliders to adjust accordingly. It is A LOT more work than simply changing a character's name.
Also, something tells me this would a whole heck of a lot more popular than the NCCs are. If it were to ever happen, it would probably cost as much as one of those Battleships.

Hmm.... perhaps then, someone could edit the admin toolbar thingie (or whatever you use) so there was a single command that would 'adjust all the sliders' to a specific faction? If there's a single line of code that edits names, it shouldn't be TOO hard to add in one that adjusts rep based on a template...
