How? Simply remove the location of players on the player list, so it should mention the name, group, rank and BLANK at the location slot
- This will end meta gaming, it's going to be hard to swap info from opposite RP characters without following the location - This will end the comms squads that meet on voice comms and start checking the player list for active groups then switch to enemy chars and start pew pew. -This will restore the true nature of Freelancer Patrols, Discovery & Role Play
Comments welcomed.
Specially from those who are in control & and can implement such a change.
Note: If it's decided to remove the location info then don't forget the forum plugin too.
Yea sure, you go ahead and search for players endlessly. Go to system to system until the grass will grow and when you find somebody to role play with, you will just have to close the game and go to do something important in real life. That's if you have any real life problems and things to do of course.
No, not a good idea. It has been brought up in the past and it is a stupid idea. This idea doesn't fit into the FL multiplayer at all. The list was done like that by the game developers with a purpose, to make it easier to find players and even easier to interact with them.
If you had said this a few years ago, I probably would've agreed with you. In fact, I even proposed or agreed with this same idea during the days of 4.85.
However, I don't think the server has enough players on it for this to actually work. The player list is responsible for much of the interaction that happens these days, so I fear if we removed the location of players from the player list, it would lead to people rarely interacting outside of New York, and just kill the server even more.

In-fact, this enhance the idea of PATROLS, so you will need to do patrols, searching for targets or defending a certain important area.
This is not a bad idea at all, this is indeed a great idea to evade meta-gamers and comms-squads -
Example:
If you are a Rhienland Military, you will have to group with other Rhienland military guys and start to classify the space and give everyone a certain location to patrol and search ... this enhance teamwork, multiplayer, role play and more.
There is many other examples, and don't worry, you won't grow a beard before you find someone to role play with, because this is the largest populated freelancer server in the entire universe.

I have actually been thinking along these lines myself for a while now. Removing the label of what system you're in will make people go back to patrolling when they know a potential 'enemy' or traders are online. It will also put value back into info gathering.
I know people will argue against, because of 'time constraints' and the difficulty sometimes of finding other players to interact with. It does get abused rather easily though. Example, if a group is gathering for a convoy, but you can't see where. People could see they are online, they are grouped together, but not know exactly what system or know which direction they're gong. That means if an enemy that wants to pirate this convoy he sees online, they will have to patrol the suspected route, rather than sit in ambush, or watch from another character so as not to give away the fact that they are staking out a system before that convoy reaches it (which then becomes reverse, and they might know to go around). This might generate more intel based RP, players/factions could turn to paying others to go and 'spy' on their targets, and use the in-game player provided info to track, not the chat list.
EDIT:
Can't find anyone to RP with? The option to PM someone and ask them if they want to join you is still there. We're just kinda spoiled and like the option of flying up to someone and scanning them first before we offer our services (or attack). They'll either want to RP or not. It wouldn't remove chance RP from breaking out because people are still passing each other in plenty of places and stations. Is this about RP or PVP capabilities being lost? AFAIK the chat list is mostly abused by people watching from the forum, until they see a ship in a system they have a ship in, quickly log, cut off and pirate said ship, then go and log off and wait for the next one. Honestly, that should not be allowed. To see that someone is online, especially for bounty hunting purposes, is totally acceptable. To need to know where they are at at all times, is not.
You wanna talk OP, here's one, how about we definitely remove the ability to see what system a cloaked ship is in while they're cloaked. Replace with ????? because thats like meta'ing the meta because not only could you not know where a cloaked ship is, you certainly would not know which system from afar, or if they've jumped in/out etc. Cloaks: Short range tracking - no, Long range tracking...yes??? Hmmmm
It is possible to change the player location displayed on the chat list. For example, making it display the players' system group rather than specific system has already been done elsewhere.
That said, just because it can be done doesn't mean it should. There is a line between immersion and playability, and this is on the wrong side of that line as we're all here to play the game together, whereas this implementation would see us scouring empty space endlessly for interactions.

only on the chat list, the change shall take place
and ofc on the player online list on the forums
