Eurybia Theater, East-side, New Thessalonica, Planet Yuma, Coronado
The exit from Residential Complex T-4 was lined up with tropical trees, leading out until the alley met with the main street. A few blocks down the road, the Eurybia Theater could be seen as nothing less than a monolith. Quite bland in looks, compared to what one could expect, but it was never meant to look amazing on the outside, but to provide entertainment and awe to those that came within. War or not, the Republic chose to hold on to simple values, such as art, for the sake of its citizens... so buildings like this one were not forgotten when the floating cities were constructed on Yuma's oceans.
It wasn't too late yet, so the theater was open to the public while a spectacle was playing in the main amphitheater. People, old and young, were still flowing through the entrance. Still, among all of them, a young man would stand aside, simply waiting. He was no guard, since they were prompted by the door; in fact, he was part of the theater's staff, temporarily asked to wait for a red-haired woman with a child - by the name of Naggar - and escort her to a meeting room.
The theater's "Grand Hall" was a vast room, clearly meant for hosting parties comprised of at least a hundred people. While not having windows, its walls were lined with wooden furniture that would allow for an artistic atmosphere [fitting, for a theater]. Still, this time, instead of the many possible tables there was only one, with seven seats, placed on the right side of the room. One could describe the table and chairs as a combination of "useful" and "stylish", sticking to a vintage look while still being modern and ergonomic enough. On the table, glasses and plates were set, along with simple cutlery.
Inside the room, everyone - except for Doreen and Benjen - had already gathered.
Minister Ryo Kase was next to the table, talking to a tall man with glasses named Richard Dean, a scientist of the 53rd Research Squadron. Already seated at the table would be Doctor Rio Umeda, a kusarian with hazel hair, silently reading something on her datapad.
To the left side of the room, a blonde man with tinted glasses would be sitting crouched, giggling along with a young boy. This was Erik Corvin, the current CEO of Yuma Robotics, who brought his son, Peter, who didn't look older than 6.
She was in her undergarments as she prepared to go to the meeting. This was probably the biggest meeting she would have to date so she wanted to look nice yet professional. What color? Red seemed to be popular and it was her favorite color to dress in but she had a full wardrobe to choose from. She found a nice, green evening gown that she hadn't worn in awhile. In fact, she couldn't remember when she did last wear it. Before slipping into it, she gave a shot of light perfume (nothing too strong) to her upper chest and then put on the chain and pendant her father had given her. Then, she slipped into the dress and put on a pair of heals. She then let her hair flow down and put on a bracelet of silver....a gift from an old friend. Looking in the mirror, she smiled and said to the person in front of her, "Girl, you got this!"
Benjen was easy. A clean pair of slacks and a nice shirt.
"I don't have to wear a tie, do I Mom?" he asked.
"No," she chuckled, "you don't. Ready?" He just nodded and they headed for the door, a small brief case in her hand.
They admired the trees as they walked. Never had either of them seen them before. There was a lot of pointing up and shouts of excitement. It was hot and humid but that didn't seem to bother them at the moment. Walking the sidewalk to the given address, they soaked in their environment and she was taking mental pictures of her surroundings. She also noticed something, she could walk down a busy street and she felt safe doing it. Houston crime was a common place.
She then saw the sign, "Eurybia Theater." "This is the place, Sweety," she said to Benjen as she entered the door. There, she found an usher.
"Excuse me, Sir, but I am Dr. Doreen Naggar. I'm supposed to have a meeting here with...."
"Say no more, Miss," he interrupted, "I've been instructed to escort you and your son. Just one second. Please, wait."
She stood and waited.
"My apologies, Miss, this way," he continued after giving another patron directions. He escorted her and the child to the table.
Ryo seems to be absorbed by the conversation he is having with Dean, discussing about the current projects within the Republic, the costs and the findings done by the 53rd, especially about planet Baja and Yuma.
"Very interesting Dean and you said that it can be done?"
"Yes, with relative ease. We just need to mimic a biodome and it shall be done. Now the costs , will be around a few good hundred millions..."
"Money is not an issue at the moment. I think we can manage. Please tell me about the drones..." Ryo asks while with his corner of the eye catch what the other members of the meeting is doing. He sees that Rio is reading from her pad and seems that she is pretty much in awe with it and for a while he had a strange feeling regarding her and on the other corner, Erik is busy with his son.
His attention is distracted when Doctor Doreen enters the room with her son. Ryo stands up and salutes her "Greetings Dr Doreen, nice to finally meet you. Apologies for not being able to respond to our last correspondence, work caught up with me. I hope that Frank was a good replacement and that he kept you entertained and looked after you. And who do we have here? Hello sir, who are you ? "Ryo looks at Benjen "Welcome to the Republic of Crayter!"
Ryo smiles to the kid and then he gesture towards the empty chairs "Please have a seat. Allow me to introduce ourselves. I am Ryo Kase , Minister of Research and Development. Next to me you see Richard Dean from the Yuma University and 53rd "Athene" Squadron. This beautiful lady "gesturing towards Rio Umeda" is Rio Umeda, Head of Medical Services. Next you see Erik Corvin , CEO of Yuma Robotics and the young gentlemen is Peter."
Ryo waits for everyone to say their piece and then asks Peter " Peter, would you be kind to show our guest here this facility if he wish for? Would not want for our guest to get bored"

As Doctor Naggar entered the room, Erik took Peter's hand and started walking to the table so as to stand along everyone else. Halfway through that short distance though, his gaze finally met with Doreen's looks. She was, to say the least, beautiful. In contrast with her emerald-like dress, Erik was wearing a semi-formal suit, grey with some dark-crimson lines, and his glasses had a red-tint due to their heliomatic composition. Erik staggered for less then a second - although it felt longer - and then reached the table. Once Kase introduced everyone, Erik bowed his head and extended an old-fashioned hand-kiss (one of the typical gestures taught in the Corvin family). "A pleasure, doctor."
Moments later, when Kase addressed Peter, the young boy - with hazel eyes, freckles, brown hair and dressed in a casual outfit - perked up, looking at the only other young person in the room. "Sule! Wanna see the big almols in the other loom?" he asked excitedly, while not entirely able to speak out every letter properly. [some "R"s were pronounced "L"s]
Doreen smiled and simply said "thank you" at the hand kiss and gave a curtsy. "It's a pleasure to meet you as well." Her smile was big but natural and she kept eye contact with Erik, a courtesy she extended to anyone whom she spoke to.
She offered her hand to the saluting Ryo, her smile just as large. "It's an honor, Sir, to be here."
She also addressed Rio seemingly involved with something.
At first, Benjen was a bit shy. He gave a soft smile to Ryo at his greeting. He seemed kind enough to him and his nervousness started to fade. "Thank you, Mr. Kase, for inviting us here." It was when Peter addressed him that his smile grew and he became excited. He didn't fully grasp what the lad said but it was someone he could relate to. He didn't answer. Instead, he followed Peter.
Doreen was happy for her son. Finally, a playmate. Hopefully, it would last. She watched as he disappeared into another room with his new friend. Before she took her seat, she gave a large exhale, one of relief almost and took her seat. Once the others were introduced, she did the same of herself, standing to do so.
"My name is Dr. Doreen Angela Naggar, former chief medical officer of Canaria Medical on Gran Canaria and the former Tinker's Haven. It is an honor and a privilege to be here with you all," she stated. She then looked to Ryo, "Thank you for inviting us here. Both my son and I look forward to a fresh beginning here. I have my dossier ready for your approval."
Giving a short nod to all present, she took her seat.
Ryo is watching the two kids going away and he is thinking that they are innocent and how lucky they are ... But he soon gets out of his daydream. He sees Doreen taking a seat and he coughs to signal the start of the talk.
"Dr. Doreen, I know I said a dinner will be involved and trust me, after this meeting and not related to the result, we will have it. But now, we need to address the issue at hand. " Ryo smiles as he is checking his pad.
"Doctor, we know who you are. Chief Medical of Gran Canaria, you treated on some of our pilots during operation Scarecrow in the Omegas and the Operation Lost of the 88th Battlegroup. Also there are reports from the Crayterians from the Tau Chi Rho group that encounter you in the Omega 49. Your abilities to run a medical crisis had been appraised. " Ryo is looking at some numbers and he looks towards Rio and smile " Doctor Rio is our chief medical but we decided that she needs the best help to take care of our injuries."
" We run at the moment 4 medical islands here on Yuma, 2 centers on Pecos and a mobile unit had been arranged on Minato, despite the damage. But our people are getting injured daily. Because of the War mainly and also different accidents. We are also proud that we have the top medical facilities in this area and that we are ready to treat any kind of injury. But for that I will let Dr. Rio speak."
Dr Rio smiles and she is speaking in a soft and calming voice. " We at the moment treat maimed soldiers and pilots, burn wounds, fragmentation wounds and all you can think in the matter of war. The wounds are various." she coughs " Also we are treating the refugees from Leeds that manage to get away and also work accidents. So basically we are having military type wounds and civilian."
Ryo thanks Rio with a head nod and he continues " As you can see, our hands are pretty full and we want the best quality treatment for our soldiers and civilians. And here is why we called you. We want to offer you a position at Yuma Medical and your own Medical Installation to run. But .... " Ryo watches Rio putting her hand at her ear and she listens and then she looks preoccupied
" Sorry for the interruption, but "Atlantis" got hit in Tau 23 on a recon mission. We were contacted by the Ares ships saying they are bringing 34 crew men in critical condition. I have to go. Nice to meet you Doreen and I hope you will accept the offer. As you can see, we are pretty busy. Sorry again" she says and she is rushing out of the meeting.
Ryo stands up and he looks as she is storming up the room, amazed by her dedication, he slowly turns towards Doreen and replies " I am sorry Doctor, as you can see , our lives are dynamic. While you study this offer, can my colleagues have a look at your dossier ? And then if you are interested, I have a second proposition to you, which is going to be explained by Mr Corvin and Mr Dean."

She looked over the offer. She read each line and was both impressed and surprised. In the past, it wasn't about money as she lived the life of a Zoner. Now she would have more than enough to take care of herself and Benjen. Finally, she would be able to give him the life a child deserved even if it was a war zone. Through the smile a tear fell down her face. It was one of joy and of relief. Sure, John Holliday taught her many things to include the respect of the Hippocratic Oath and that money wasn't everything but she could even send money home to her struggling family.
For a moment, she lost herself to the very generous offer before she quickly shook her head, "Yes, Dossier." She handed Ryo an envelope. In it was her degree in medicine that she had received from Cambridge Medical on Planet Cambridge, a letter of recommendation from Dr. John Holliday, a transcript of her internship aboard Med Force One, a transcript of her time with Canaria Medical as well as one from the old Tinker's Haven. She also had a transcript from Cambridge Medical giving her the medicinal disciplines of pediatrics and internal medicine. The letter of recommendation read:
I am Dr. John Henry Holliday, CEO and Chief Medical Officer of Med Force Enterprises. I had the honor and privilege to mentor, train and intern Miss Naggar aboard my own flag ship. It was also an honor the day i handed control of Canaria Medical over to her. I never had to worry about it's day to day operations with her there. In her time there, Dr. Naggar dealt with everything from disease and research of it to combat wounds to helping Bretonian refugees at the Port Jackson refugee center. It was the latter that in my opinion that made her into the humanitarian that she became and that I became proud of.
For the years that she worked for and with me, she quite simply, was the best that I had trained. I feel that her adversity from her leaving Rheinland has been more of an asset than she realizes.
I think that whoever takes her on is getting the finest medical officer that they will find anywhere. I only ask that she be taken care of and respected.
Sincerely,
Dr. John Henry Holliday
CEO, Med Force Enterprises
"I will want to find a nice home for Ben and I," she said kindly, "the flat is a nice start but we can live out a dream here in a way. Also, I just want a good school for him."
She stood as the announcement of the Atlantis was made and a look of concern crossed her face. First she watched Dr. Rio leave the room and then turned to Rio, "If someone looks after Ben and gets me some whites, I can help if you want?"
Ryo is passing the dossier to the others around the table and he smile at Doreen remark "Ma'am , I do not want to impose but you just arrived in the Republic. We don't expect you to just jump on the job, plus trust me when I tell you that soon you will get your hands full. "
"As for your son, he can have a place at Yuma University and at Yuma Schools as part of the package. Also , I know that sum may not mean a lot but inside the Republic there is little need for money. "
Ryo saw her tear running on her cheek and he watches the other people around the table. "Now that we settle the first part of the offer, let me once more welcome you to the Republic of Crayter. You will be given an Government ID and access to medical files and the procedures that took place until now. You may realize that even if we have a small population we are a warlike nation and that is also seen in our files. " he stood a little and then continue " Now , to the second proposal we want to offer you, is more like a hobby if you wish to think of. But I will let mr Erik and Mr. Dean speak now."
Eurybia Theater, East-side, New Thessalonica, Planet Yuma, Coronado
Erik smiled when Doctor Naggar offered to help with the medical urgency. Any man or woman who would offer help on the spot was nothing less than deserving of a place in Crayter Republic, since that was exactly the Crayterian way - to be always ready. He took Doreen's dossier and stopped at the letter of recommendation. As he started reading it, he was amazed by Holliday's words. He knew very well of the old doctor's reputation, so praises from him were quite relevant in this situation.
His focus shifted from the dossier when Kase replied to Doreen's concerns about schools. As a part-time professor himself,
at the Yuma University, Erik had in-depth knowledge of the educational system on Yuma and felt the need to add "I'd be more than happy to go over your possible choices of education for Benjen, doctor Naggar, once everything else here is settled." As he ended his statement he took a quick fatherly glance towards the door to the other room, where he knew the kids were.
A few moments later, once Kase mentioned a second proposal, Erik set the dossier aside and spoke sternly "Ah yes. The latest project i've been handling at Yuma Robotics is directed at the medical field. My colleagues and I have been working on a couple of prototype surgical tools that we plan on implementing in the near future. I'll leave all the technical details for a later date, but the essential query here is whether you'd be interested in working with us on it, as an adviser from a medical point of view."
He was interrupted when a member of the staff came in and announced: "Pardon the intrusion, the first course is ready to be served. Shall I bring it?"
In the other room, the two kids had been playing and conversing happily, with Peter exhibiting the usual awe of a child his age. Every minute or so, he'd grow curious and ask Benjen random questions like: "So, whele are you flom?" / "What do you like to do/play?" / and many others.
Doreen gave a bright smile to Erik, "Benjen is a fourth grader right now so college is a ways off." She directed her attention more to him, "He's great with numbers, something I'm not. Numbers, languages and science. He speaks Libertonian and some Rheinlandic but understands the latter better than he speaks it, probably because it's my native tongue. If he has a weakness, I think he unintentionally crosses the two."
"As to your second offer of prototype surgical tools, I would love to assist with this," she said with another smile as she gave attention to both Erik and Ryo, "I think we have a lot to offer each other. I think we can help each other a lot. It helps that I have some good connections."
She then sighed and put on a natural look, "I've been studying your laws which makes my next issue a bit testy." She hands them a list that includes synthetic marijuana, halo tainment bands, cardamine, stabiline and human organs. "I don't use synth but it does help with some patients so I'm asking for an OK to prescribe it with heavy restrictions," she explained, "Halo tainment bands, when controlled, make for a alternative anesthesia. Human organs, well, they are medically needed in some cases and as I'm a student of science and forever will be, I research the mysteries of cardamine and hope to find a reversal for it like my old mentor used to. I'll pay for any licensing that I may require and keep that work in a secret place from the public."
