yea that also..
this is not limited to drones but also to players and npcs, its just how freelancer aiming works. the only way to solve this problem is by completely removing crosshairs from the game or reworking the entire game.
Okay then, Anyone want my drone bays? Because I'm not humoring this for a nanosecond.
EDIT: To further comment on this - Not only is this drone stuff being dropped on us with minimal awareness, but we're not even fully aware of their capabilities. Yes, the LN Carrier had them for a while now, but:
A. Not many people have LN carriers or are willing to buy them to try them out
B. AFAIK drone functions are not available in single player, nor is single player a viable environ to test their effectiveness if they are.
That and where is the Carrier bays we've been waiting for? I'd take carrier bays over this any day of the week, because at least we could have something useful that isn't the space-faring equivalent to a fly asking to be swatted out of the sky.
EDIT: Oh, and while we're at it, why don't we remove primaries and half secondaries on all carriers? If we're going for this "Real life carriers.." Argument, then we might as well force all carriers to mount Flak cannons only - or for once, make it so Solarises can function as a Point defense weapon.
If anything they should give smaller carriers like Elbe and Zephyr more secondaries.
Right now the drones are fine as they are, the missile is high damage but that is because it is expected from you to shoot the drone as soon as it gets close. Carriers will not be overpowered as the time for a drone to spawn is rather long (60s if I remember correctly) The drones also use the movement pattern of NPCs so if you've done at least some missions you will have a pretty good idea of what it might do next, there for making it easy for you to kill it.
On the other hand carriers will by no means be able to win anything alone. Your position as a carrier is to stay behind the fleet of battleships, or even better a wing of bombers, and provide support. Put pulses on your primary slots to take out shields, and be a support platform for snub fights.
If this style of combat doesn't suit you then I suggest you get another type of capital ship. Battlecruisers are not bad, unlike some people believe, just that they need getting used to. There is also the fact carriers are always the secondary main capital, and you always have another choice, and honestly those are usually better anyway. Cruisers need love as few people fly them these days, not knowing how deadly a group of these might just be.
Okay, the Drone bays aren't the worst thing ever, sure. But the implementation is being done so poorly. Yes, the Drones have a better chance of hitting their targets then you do... But they might as well be fruit flies with how they act.
The biggest offence here is not giving players a choice. Just removing the heavies and saying "Too bad" pretty much just does not work. And I'll admit, I don't know how the code works so I'm just spitballing here, so keep that in mind.
The way I would put these in would be unique heavy slots for Carrier class ships. Maybe make it so you can't use heavies while it's mounted, I don't know if that's possible. (Maybe make it fill in the other Heavy slot on the Carrier?) That way you could have the Carrier play the way players want it to, even more so once the Carrier bays proper come out into the game.
I still think drones are more useful than 2 heavy weapon in fleet fights. Drones are effective vs any capital ship from gunboat to battleship but it is up to what kind of drone you are deploying
Here is the few info about drones;
Drone deployment time is 60 second
Drone attack range is 5.000m (target must be in drone range, not yours)
Drone have strong shield but Fighter anti-shield weapons(debs) deals x2.5 more damage to Drone shields
Drone cant damage ship armor if it is alone, you basically need someone else or use your pulses to keep them deshielded so drone can hit the armor.
Drone is more useful in fleet fights and if there is multiple carrier that deploying drone they become serious threat and needs to be taken down quickly otherwise you will lose your capital fleet quickly
I highly recommend using Autohotkey to use carrier commands.
-mdrone : Missile Launcher drone that has very fast, high tracking missile launcher. It is fast enough to track gunboats and cruisers. -tdrone : Torpedo Launcher drone, its slow but heaviest torpedo that means it is very hard to deflect this torpedo with Flak Turrets. This drone most useful vs Battlecruisers and Battleships where your drone is not primaried everytime -sdrone : Single-use torpedo drone. this one deals the most damage but its single launch. You need to keep an eye on this drone, after it launch the torpedo you need to use /dronerecall command and redeploy it again, this drone only good if hostile ships keep destroying your drone before it launch another torpedo. Use this drone against Battlecruisers and Battleships, its not fast enough to track Cruiser/Gunboats but if you are lucky you can hit them
As you can see, Carriers can be multi-purpose ships and can be very good support ship and even a good ship for Fleet Commanders.

As a sidenote, why don't you use eg. lmd instead of lightmdrone? You could simply explain all the shortened forms on forums in a tutorial anyways. It's much faster to type and no additional programs (like your AutoHotkey) would be required.
I tested drones and i find them good enough to be in game , they are not perfect ,but certanly better that some other havily bugged but still present elements of game .
I have seen and tested only heavy versions , light versions not yet made/implemented in next patch ?
