So Microsoft launched Freelancer and now you're... what exactly? Modding Freelancer files or making a new game with Freelancer assets?
Basically its SDK for Unity3d to create FL style gameplay with multiplayer support including pvp, docks and systems. So ye its Unity3d based.
Current stage is to recreate pvp with addition of new game mechanics, the goal will be some sort of Connecticut system where you can choose and fit your ship and go pew pew.
Stage 2 is docking.
Stage 3 is system jump, which will support one server instance per system to allow scaleable solution.
And only after stage 3 FL remake can happen if there will be enough modders to work with Unity.
As for performance, 150 fighting ships at one space point is okay.

Damn interesting. Thank you for sharing your work. Do you have any time estimates?

pvp stage is already playable, it just requires implementing friendly controls and UI, you can find old build in the first post, I hope to release next this weekend with more content and additions.
docking - nothing
multiserver system support - login module yes, remote server instancing at the very beginning and hard one, it requires at least two remote machines for dev purposes and some deployment solution.
as for time estimates, about two months I guess to finish pvp stage with all required visuals and content ideas to look FLish.
