Hello!
I'm a professional online poker player and a coach
With a bad habit of playing too much dota when I wanted a break from variance and bad feelings
But problem with dota of course is that it's super stressfull and leaves you mentally drained,so here I was sitting and bam - remembered I used to play older games and because I got stuck on Dota and Starcraft:Broodwar for some 20years I wouldn't mind the graphics.
So I pulled out freelancer I used to play when it came out but never finished campaign. Finished single player, and then found discovery - so instead of exploring rest of Rheinland in Vanilla I logged in here, and it was way more relaxing than dota indeed.
I picked up where I started - just wanted to explore as I finished the limiting single player story line. Took basic alloy all I could buy (about 30% of cargo space) and clicked in best price that was to take me to Taus.
On the way I saw a small mining area in some system I forgot with one Base I've never mined in my life, in freelancer I never figured it out and just took kill missions.
And my first mining experience was cargo hold full of..
alien organisms along with my basic alloy.
So I fly to Taus as planned, saying hi to the only player I met all game who just flew off. And found some weird jumpgates and ruins - that was super cool, had no clue what these were, looked like German aristocracy or Von Harkonnen clan
And here I was on planet Harris selling alien organisms for 2 mill and basic alloy as my first trade. So I explored some more, and decided - this is cool Let's do that again. But I couldn't find the system anymore, still have no clue where I mined those little bastards to this day.
So instead I flew and went exploring, got to nagano, to a hidden mining Base with a racetrack where my rep wasn't high enough and it all felt super cool, was glad I went into disco instead of freelancer.
And here comes my very first mission- with a blood dragons hidden battleship Base after buying their rep - I figured those mining bastards don't want me, why not have some fun.Finished an easy mission, got destroyed on harder one (turns out high reward missions aren't easy with basic freighter and mining guns)
This was very lucky as I could fly to Kyoto Base that was the last single player campaign station where you could do missions,I was just on yesterday, even moved through jumpholes used in the campaign, got to the Arch Base, explored how it looks after dealing with it just a day ago in single player, even flew to omicron and fought nomads!
I was ecstatic about discovery at this point, of how it built on the campaign worlds and the. It was not so fun as I got lost in Omicron and there are no autowaypoints with just
Phones and I barely can the map on website. On top of that I didn't have good enough rep with The order so I could land but not do anything and there were no players in sight. So I finally dock with a pirate faction, take a mission and get blasted right away- apparently 30million missions have only nomad gunboats my mining freighter can handle.
So I made my 2nd purchase ever in discovery - alien artifacts, the same damn egg I just fought and entire story line over the day before. And figures I can finally get unlost and go through Alaska back and end my frustration. I spend a lot of time going to NY jump hole and there I set autowaypoint to dock but kept bumping into a battleship that was white allegiance, finally got through but suddenly I got destroyed - figured because I bumped into it I caused enough damage to turn it to hostile.
To my shagrin I was back...Back in Omicron. Buy artifacts again, spend a very frustrating time getting back to NY and then almost quit Discovery altogether. Because my first player interaction was a RP liberty navy person who wouldn't explain anything, just kept disrupting my cruise telling me to stop but didn't destroy me, never said why
I kept saying I'm a beginner just want to get back...this was getting more frustrating than dota he kept role playing.I even told him he's making me quit the game and I really meant it, explained everything he didn't care.
Just a word out there as you don't have many newcomers - if you see one who doesn't know whats happening has basic ship just let him learn the game and not go so long to omicrons back just because you started your navy pilot...
Anyways after many hours I give disco another chance, go without artifacts go through Alaska, meet a navy player but this time it's not that bully but someone with empathy who doesn't stop me because I'm in restricted area and just comments "interesting choice of a system" and let's me go, I make it back thank God.
Since then I had a great experience, decided to break RP, start a character "I'm new just let me fly pls" on my 2nd day, actually read tutorial made some money and went exploring systems again through Rheinland I never went to in Vanilla using the map on website.
And the player experience was wey better - some sent couple millions, answer questions. I even messaged high ranking players asking where jumpholes are, and in my last couple hours met this amazing Junkers miner mining same ore who flew all the way to London from Rheinland with me, gave me 10mill, explained how showrestart and mining IDS work, where are good fast ones to make money, and really got me started, thank you very much kind Junker!
So here I am, the idea of multiple characters feels weird as I just finished single-player and it's nice to have the illusion that the character =me,and I have some more exploring to do.
Closing remarks
-The beginner guides, YouTube videos and wiki are hard to navigate through for a complete beginner because of changes to the game and so much inconsistent stuff out there. One helpful Junker helped me more in 30minutes than hours spent on guides, wiki and YouTube videos
-It's great to see addons, story and consistency with vanilla universe. Loved the French systems and destroyed Leeds and all the stories
- there are amazing helpful players out there, insane to know people played for years and are still in the game, you should really value what you have here in the developers
- Please if you RP don't stick to it too hard when you are about to make someone who doesn't know whats happening quit in their first few hours altogether, the server needs new players and I doubt there are many total newcomers to turn them off like this when you're their first interaction and they are already frustrated after getting lost in their first flight.
Heyo Vaclav and welcome to Discolancer! I did actually read your wall of text because it was well spaced out, thank you for that. I have been here around 3 or 4 months now I think, (who's counting) and I can give you some tips from a newbie perspective.
This forum and the Disco server consists of Heavy Roleplay. So there are a lot of rules and structure that make it all work.
For example, those artifacts you were transporting are actually illegal in a lot of house systems either outright or without a permit. Therefore the Liberty Navy ship that was trying to stop you was doing so because you were transporting illegal items through the space they patrol. They were disrupting your cruise engines because inrp they have a responsibility to at least try and stop you and give you a chance to surrender your cargo. If you don't stop or manage to escape somehow, they may be authorized to blow you to bits for breaking their house rules.
In short, while it is possible to play this game in a casual light, you may have a hard time of it if you don't read and inrp obey the house rules. Unless you want to rp a pirate then by all means you may inrp break them. Just don't get caught.
The links @Save My Soul shared above are excellent resources to help get started but in truth, the rp takes some investment and research to get the hang of.
Edit: I should add though that if you are into rp and are willing to make the investment then I can tell you that it is worth it. A lot of people here put a lot of effort into their rp and it can make a for a lot of fun.
I'm not sure if there are any other active Freelancer online servers around that are casual. The others here might be able to help with that.

Ye ,sadly we have few of them who are like that, they dont realize (or they dont care) that they ruin game and chase away players ,and worst thing is that they are official faction leaders and that their actions are tolerated mostly.
Try to ignore them and have fun.
