Hello, I'm pretty new to FL. I played 15-20 yrs ago.
I know this game is complex and a lot to learn, but a few immediate things I need help with are:
1. I'm a bit confused about ID's . The game assigned me an ID I guess.
2. I died and can no longer accept or abort missions, unless I create a new character.
3. Teaming up with others and how to get started.
4. When i search for games, it seems like there is just one server and only 15 or so people play this game but something tells me that is not true.
Second, are you talking about the ID you get in the game menu, or the ID piece of equipment you get automatically when starting a new character?
You need to save the generated ID you get when you first join a multiplayer server so you can get your account back in case of reinstalling, hard drive failure etc. This is a basic Freelancer feature, and as far as I can tell it's unchanged from 15 years ago.
(as far as I can tell the Discovery launcher can do this for you using the Backup Account option, but don't quote me on that),
The other ID, the actual ID equipment is a Discovery specific thing. Since this is a Role Play server the ID serves as a way of identifying the role/faction you are playing (in normal RPGs that would be your faction/class).
It enables you to do certain things in the game (while preventing you from doing other things). You can find what you are allowed to do by reading the Infocard for it.
2. There is currently a mission bug caused by the new patch. It can be worked around but I don't know the correct steps. I'd avoid doing missions for the time being.
3. Read guides (such as this one https://discoverygc.com/forums/showthrea...tid=177338). It's a great example of what kind of communication is expected from you on the Forums when you are representing your character, while still being helpful as a general gameplay guide. Otherwise, don't be afraid to ask more experienced players in-game! I guess any lvl 85+ you see will probably be helpful and friendly to a newcomer
4. What is your timezone, and most importantly did you actually install Discovery mod using these instructions (https://discoverygc.com/forums/showthrea...tid=126999) ? Because there are at least 70 people on the server right now?
But if you see only 15 people it sounds more like vanilla server...

Thank you!
All this is helpful.
I was confused about the whole ID thing. Now it makes sense.
The guide is awesome. I think I will stop doing missions and start mining right away. With this mission bug should I continue my current character or just start over? Will I be able to do missions eventually with this character?
I do think I installed Discovery correct. I see 63 people on right now.
I'm on PST timezone. However, I've tried in-game chat and no one seems to respond. I thought they were all bots. Maybe I'm chatting wrong?

Hi there! Welcome to Discovery!
You don't actually have to ditch your current character, just give the Dev team some time to fix the mission bug
You can also create a secondary character for mining and then transfer your hard-earned credits to the original character. To transfer credits, open the chat and type in the following:
/givecash your character's exact nameamount of credits
It is indeed possible these ships you saw on the radar (bottom left window on the HUD) were actual bots.
To check for other human players, press Y to open the list of all people currently online and find the system you're currently in.
Keep in mind, for other people to see your messages, they should stay within your radar range.
Also, you might already know that Discovery is a roleplay (RP) server. So, whenever you interact with other players, you should try to do it as if you were an actual character in the Freelancer universe.
If you need to ask someone for help with the game mechanics, better send them a private message. To do so, click on their ship and type in the chat:
Hey not sure if this is the place to asking but I'm looking for updated mining or trade routes. I found out that some info on this site is outdated, like for example the site says that niobium is sold on Planet Tokyo, but I was there and they do not sell it.
You can start mining helium on pennsylvania, then sell it to canterbury station, it pays 6000 per unit, so you can make a good ammount of money per trip.
