What you should really stop focusing on is trying to slap a ship together and be done with it. Right now you're just stretching and rearranging primitives, which is a good start but you'll need more than that to get a ship into Discovery.
A suggestion on something to practice might be taking a cube and shaping and manipulating it into the main hull, you can do this via vertex manipulation as well as extrusion and a few other nifty things. You'll be on your own for that since I'm most likely not familiar with your software.
You're doing well at getting the hang of all the basics though.
I know what your saying. I do this to see what I have to make before I truly make it. Things that don't line up are not going to be the final faces for the model. Get it time...give me time...I what to get the general feel for the ship. And yes I build the hall. It has 186 points all arranged by me. I plotted on graph paper put them in the program. I went with the same design because that was the look I was searching for...
Is the more of what you want to see? Extruding is around one of my last steps for a model? So I can have detail as long as it's not round?
Edit: If nobody minds im going to use the defender cockpit and put it into the model.

Deffy cockpit makes sense... God, all thes people new to modeling doing such a good job makes me want to fix my comp all the sooner. Ah iz in the modeling mood!!!
Some say that he is allergic to a fungus found only between the toes of Corsairs,
and that he is oblivious to 98% of Liberty Law. All we know is... He's called the Busdriver!
Hm... cockpit is a bit of a problem. but wing configuration is fine.
judging from the wing, way too many poly wasted for them. where you have over 4 division on one smooth face, you dont need any at all...
Happy to be a inspiration:)I hope you fix your PC soon!
Edit: Yep I know...Wings are not final. And will be updated. nor is the intakes and of course the cockpit. Swink you eyes and image the defender Cockpit on it...
Edit: And yes I am very new. My team usually make the models but they said its time for me to learn but there busy so Monday I started actually making models, in complete form. My others projects don't count cause there slashed together.
Edit: What ploy count would be good for one single wing?
EDIT: I made the wings and have only 3 divisions. Those wings where two meshes put together. I don't see anything less then 3 ploys can be achieved. but if you say It can be less then I will look.

Got it. the new wings are better. And the Cockpit transfer is completed. Now I will be places the hardpoint mounts (model part) And since the Cockpit has for mounts on it i don't know how many hardpoints I need or...want.

This one (to me) looks like a six-gun ship. Two on the sides of the cockpit, maybe level 9? 8?, and one on each horizontal wing (10's)

With the new stuff added it looks heavy enough to be a bomber. There are so many places that can be a mount truly could out gun anything. But It can't support it's RP power supply. I will release the updated screens very soon. This will be the last real adjustments before I go on too Concept 2.
I will also program it to out perform the Defender by 50% and then adjust the right combo. So far the Cockpit is complete for modeling. And the vertical Wing is complete. Main body has been reshaped to fit more of the Liberty Feel. Since now it would be foolish to say it's something else.
