the original intent was to add more RP to capships. in reality they would fly the same, shoot the same, act the same.
the only thing it would change would be that a battleship wouldn't be able to say "time to buy more b/b's, i'll just dock with this station that could feasibly fit in my hanger bay"....sure they wouldn't ACTUALLY say that....it's the action that counts :D
this is not as much a balance change as it's an attempt at a potential RP increase
' Wrote:it's all part of the idea, limiting the supply chain (places to dock) for the larger ships. either they'll have to stay close to a dockable base or rely on supply ships
You see, no. You are wrong. Hessians only have asteroid bases at the moment. How could they service their Cruisers or Gunboats? It would be impossible for them to dock, even on allied bases since neither of their allies has shipyards either. Unless, they are meant to go to the Omicrons to dock at an Outcast base or something? In which case I am completely against this.
I have often thought that limiting big ships from docking at small bases was a good idea, and I like Sovereign aerodynamical argument. It kinda throws a spanner into the mix and complicates the matter, but I like it never the less. I do think it would reduce Cap-usage and this has nothing to do with game balance as another pointed out. Now if we were to restrict capships saying they couldn't use trade lanes - another idea I'm fond of - I could well imagine criticism mounting up.
One thing though - certain restructuring would need to take place e.g. you could buy a Pirate Cruiser at Bornholm, but you couldnt dock with one.

you are correct, Hessians would have to use far away docks.....unless (dramatic pause) they were resupplied by smaller support vessels which is what i mentioned before. in RP the larger ships just don't fit in these tiny bases. i think it would be kinda neat to have these large ships rely on smaller ones for supplies. for major repairs and gun refits they would have to go to a sizable dock just like they should. but other than that they would get their bats and bots from others.
the bots would be used to repair any hull damage from a fight, and one repair ship could restock it easily. if it were to lose a weapon or such, yes you'd have to find an appropriate place to dock.
most of the bases in Discovery are still geared toward SP which was limited to fighters for the most part. with the addition of capships, especially to factions that never have had them before. most bases won't be able to support large ships.
a good example of how this would work is the Liberty Rogue Destroyer in NY, when a large ship tries to dock with it they hear a message along the lines of "sorry we aren't equiped to support a vessel of your size". so i think it can be done i'm just not sure if it can be made to distinguish between the different capships
Dreygon: but there has to be a way to not make this tedious for the players. Because it might be a cool novelty for a time, but when you got to log out and you need to F1 in space around other players... or when you're repping the ship and you can't dock at any of the proper bases... it just gets annoying then. If something like this was to be put in, it would need each faction with big ships to get a base able to support big ships. Otherwise it's just ridiculous.
sure there are kinks that would have to be worked out. i just thought it would be kind of neat. i guess it could be RP'd as such now without any changes but like you say people don't want the hassle.
Each faction should have a dockable base for large ships inside thier ZOI to make this work. the Bases used for IC can dock battleships (SP Mission 1)
I would not mind this as long as each NPC faction allowed caps had a place to dock them without having to fly way out of thier way. Inside thier Guard system perhaps?
