Ususally whent the Outcasts attack Crete we fight near tripoly. keeps us away from the planet, their forces come in sorta scattered, can do RP damage to the shipyard, and the asteroid field shields us from the capships.
We only go to crete when we win to pose for the "group picture"
one thing i think that would make having really strong planet defenses annoying is the fact that NPCs freak out on their allies so very often, so a Liberty Gunboat shoots a CD at the guy going to speed-dock on Manhatten with Artifacts and the NPCs insta-kill him instead of the smuggler. It would be very annoying.

Advanced weapon platforms around major planet docking rings. Big guns for big planets after all.
I already have a model that'll be posted soon.

The more I think about this and read posts from it's detractors the more I like it.
It would indeed provide safe havens for factions around their bases, planets, and stations. It would even give protection from capital ships. There are a few bases now, in just regular non-guard systems, that can take out BS's why not make them all like this.
The only people it would actually harm are pvper's.
If people wished to RP they can RP. When they wish to settle something with pvp they can meet and pvp. Travel between systems would begin to be somewhat stressful since those would be the times one is extremely vulnerable.
Tradelanes and Jumpgates should remain as they are. We do not need that many safe havens. It could even be more exclusive and only be dockable planets and or BS stations. And the odd station that is the Main base for some factions like Buffalo and Kyoto.
People mentioned it would be taken advantage of...but how? A player should be at an advantage when in orbit of their planets and BS stations. As this thread and the warning thread it is coming from show, people really do not like base camping.
Of course those here who RP, follow the rules, and want others to have a good time will do the right thing. The problem is those who are not like that, they will continue to do what they please.
People will actually have places to sit and the opportunity to RP without be blasted away in a few seconds. Once folks are content with doing their RP they can venture away from the base and pvp.
I really think this would bring a very helpful dynamic to the game that is currently missing and really is contributing greatly to pvpwhoreing, oorpness, and capwhoring.

If you're a pirate in house systems and you come close to any lawful base or planet you start to see battleship groups show up in mass. I remember flying my Rogue GB near Manhattan and 3 battleship groups (that's 3 battleships, 6 cruisers and 6-12 fighters) just spontaneously show up. I do hope 4.85 does the same for the Omicrons.

I agree here. These 4 battle cruisers should have been frightened away by the Corsair defense force around their home world. I mean ... isn't that what role play dictates?

I've been repfixing sometimes - when trade companies have become hostile to me... they show up, the military turn hostile, the planet gets hostile and so I can't fix it grr. this would be worse if I died instantly too!

Disco is a pretty static what comes to bases and planet's changing hands, so I can't see any reason at all not to implement planetary defenses. Besides it still leaves the backside of the planet open for "RP" bombardment.
If the guy's fleeing a fight so what? I don't long to see the kill message to know that I came out on top of it. Thus I don't see any reason to finish him off. It gives so much more RP opportunities for me to "gloat over the comms".
I'd like to hear what you mean exploiting tactics.
I didn't talk about attacking a planet.
Now people taking refuge under friendly guns, would lead to following situation.
Lets say Player A gets engaged by 2 hostiles B & C near a base/planet friendly to player A. Now what if A thrusts closer to the defenses, B & C would eventually have to stop following A. Sounds good till now. Now if hostiles(B & C) are outside the range of defenses A can continuously use thrusters to come near them fire a few shots and retreat back using thrusters.
What this will result in people whining over forums against those people who use this tactic just as they are doing the same for planet campers. I fully agree planet camping is bad when done in PvP mode, but there are some RP planet camping opportunities that would be missed.
Then we also have the issue of CDs and mines used by friendly players upsetting the locals and causing the planetary defense to target them.
Regarding the "gloat over the comms" thing, if the hostiles do the same while staying out of range of defenses then we will start having these gloating wars. Anytime a superior force goes hunting into a hostile territories the folks over there would simple sit beside planetary defenses while saying how uber they are, and the hostile force can do nothing more than taunt them to fight outside the defenses. If thats the style of gameplay you want on disco then uber planetary defenses are a good idea.
Instead of having these Uber planetary defense how about having more heavy patrolling of bases and planets by heavy firepower forces. Then a hostile force can still try to camp a planet but it will be tough as even a small friendly force can tilt the balance against the hostiles.

I've been involved in a few gamma raids where either before or after the people showed up we "bombed" the planet with like a super nova or something. And then proceeded to attack Tripoli to "hinder ship production" completely for RP sake that is.
So planet attacking can be resourceful when gathering Roleplay stories/coverage
