The Police ID is the one you seem to get most often at start up, and like what was posted earlier, you see it all the time on so many different players that as far as i know its fine for generic players to have - and the majority of the community, at least for the time ive been here, seem to see it that way in game.
I have a trader that im pretty sure is police tagged, ive traded into pirate systems - and rarely if ever get asked about it after my ship has been scanned and occasionally taxed.
When asked, i say that the character "registered" his ship with the authorities of his local system, hence the tag. - an entirely plausible explanation if i do say so myself.
What i feel is most important here is the ID and then (for pirates and/or zealous cops) the cargo - In the case of the Liberty embargo, liberty players should know what cargoes are likely to be carried by a trader coming from rheinland and vice versa.
Personally, I think the Police tag is NOT generic. Yes, you start with it. BUT. It's a Liberty Police tag in the end. If you saw an American police jet to Iraq or a similar country today, you can imagine what would happen. The same thing is in the game: if you're identified as something on the outside, people may not have the time to scan before shooting; especially traders, who tend to cruise along on their route instead of stopping. I agree that new players should be more sensitised to stuff like this, although I'm not feeling original enough at this hour to think up a good way to do that.
THEY TOLD ME I COULD BE ANYTHING SO I BECAME A SIGNATURE PLS HLP
First of all, I think the starting reps should be slightly adjusted to avoid this all "police tag any id" mess.
Secondly, depots and NPCs are part of rep fixing. It's not really OORP if nobody notices/cares. For example, if a Rheinland cruiser came to bering to shoot npcs for fun, and players noticed, then it'd be pretty OORP. If the other players thought he was just rep fixing, it's a necessary oorp activity so they should leave him alone.
Xoria (I think) had an idea to have depots of every faction in Conneticut for players to rep fix on. I think that's a good idea, and a bunch of Police depots definately need to be placed there:).
I could see having a pirate ID and police IFF being a problem. I could see having a trader ID and Pirate IFF being a problem because traders are lawful and police are lawful. I could see having a smuggler id and police IFF being a problem, but not Trader/Police. Both are lawful, it doesent cross the line.
The one time I complained about it, there was someone with liberty police ID and IFF hauling diamonds. There was also someone doing the same run with a trader id and police IFF, and everyone thought I was yelling at the latter and so quickly ''corrected' me.
It says match closely as possible, not match 100%. The IFF of your ally (i.e. house traders are allied with house police) would still make you the correct color to everyone else who had their ID card in order, the bases would be the correct colors, and so would the NPC's.

Just out of curiosity - how about a level 43, Civ ID, Police IFF, flying a Corsair Titan fighter? :P
Seriously - ran into that person yesterday. I discussed things with him, and again, I don't think English is his native language.
Those of us who are on the server, doing RP with all of our characters are GOING to run into oddball situations with rep and ID. Hell, I've got a character that, due to the way I started him, is friendly with all but a few NPC factions - he's even green with TWO guard factions.
(In case you're wondering how something like that happens, I started him from scratch and didn't take any assistance from anyone else, so he earned his way up to level 60 all by himself, doing missions and trading, moving up in ships as he could. I've got almost 150 hours invested in him.)
I'm adopting a standard rule of thumb. If I see someone that, due to the character that I'm on I should be engaging the oddball player in combat, I'll talk to them the first time. If I see them on the server a couple of days after that and they haven't changed things, then.... :rtfm:
Yes, well, the IFF/Tag determines who you are affiliated with, which for a trader ID would be who you work for. Now, why would Liberty Police mercs be taking unlawful contracts, or Liberty Police traders hauling diamonds and niobium. In fact, the Liberty Police wouldn't even have (many) traders; for prisoner transport and stuff you'd use an LPI ID and tag combo.
' Wrote:I trade with all legal house groups, is someone going to tuen me in for trading with Kusari if I take a shipment of optronics to Cambridge....
If the Optronics originated in Kusari, then, yes, that's illegal smuggling. I doubt we'd report you, though, unless you were being rather obtuse about it. If I were on my BAF and saw you bringing them in, you'd either A) be ordered to turn back to Kusari, or B) be escorted to the nearest BAF or BPA base and forced to sell your cargo there, even if you take a loss on it. If you failed to comply, you'd be sent back to Kusari in very small pieces.......
I'm really spechless someone really DOES care about something as puny as police tag on a trader. Circumstances are such, that most of my noobs in vipers get an LPI tag after attempting to get an IMG tag by doing IMG missions on IMG territory. They either have to double-bribe or rely on others if they want to avoid it.
Face it - LPI tag is the easiest and quickest to get regardless how far away from what you plan LPI is. And it is sometimes such a pain to get rid of, that setting up a new char often appears as the best option.
So chill the bleep out and start flying with fraps on to snoop out speed modders if you're THAT keen on keeping the server's behaviour in check.
As the Thread owner i have the right to say the following:
jop & Laowai, you missed my point
I'm not saying that having a trader ID and Police TAG is ooRP. <thus i agree with Laowai & jpo
But i can't hide how angry i am that you twisted my words. You pulled my arguments out of context
and made irrelevant statements that some other reader may see as contradicting.
so without further waste of time ill try to make my points clear.
1) He had a Gen-Trader ID with trader ship and was registered at the local police. It's OK!
2) He traded in liberty, in front of admins and wasn't sanctioned. It's OK!
3) He is a total mega-noob and thinks that you have to kill police to get rid of their tag but it's OK!
BUT:
1) He traded military stuff between Liberty and Rheinland. But how???
2) He flew what is considered contraband from Liberty to Rheinland and vice-verse WITH A TRADER ID
and completely ignored that trading contraband is considered a crime known as smuggling and thus he should have had a Smuggler ID and some other TAG. Only smugglers in RP are considered able to dock Jumpgates and tradelanes without their contraband being noticed by the local forces. If he traded this with his Police license he would have been arrested and his license taken away from him. Otherwise its ooRP
+ he thinks he can go anywhere with any trader ship under any tag as long as he has the Trader ID.
+ he doesn't care about any local policies.
+ he thinks Dresen is not in Rheinland
Im not saying he should be sanctioned thou. I say we should "waste our energy" on helping them understand the concept of a RP server. If we stay ignorant or submissive as Laowai and Magoo! suggest then all we'll have is a new wave of PvPwhores "who will ditch us in two weeks".
I say we teach them, guide them. I agree with the admins that "sanction should be our last resort" but it also requires us to put some effort into making our server more suitable for RP.
