Hello there. Welcome to Disco. :)
I thought I was the only Argentinian who liked to play freelancer. Seems not. :yahoo:
High pings are something we must learn to live with while playing Freelancer, unfortunately. I've never had a ping under 200, except for once, which was when we ran the server on my computer, long ago, for a brief period of time. It didn't make much of a difference for me, given the way I fly.
Fortunately, the game isn't like Counter Strike, BF2, or any other FPS, where a low ping is critical. Here, we can have a lot of ping and still fly masterfully, as the distances involved in a dogfight are huge compared to an FPS, and shoots take a long time (relatively speaking) to reach the enemy ship (and also because of the way FL handles multiplayer mode, which is quite lag-tolerant).
Still, to lower your ping, shut down all P2P programs, like eMule, Kazaa, azureus, and torrent. Given the traffic prioritization our ISP's do, shutting down those programs will lower your FL ping notably. the less Inet traffic there is, the lower your ping will be. connection speed and ping are not that related if the max speed is never reached. You could have a 20meg pipe, and the game could still lag, as the problem might be caused by a crappy router hub between your PC and the server (remember that Simpsons episode where an old man hits a Cisco router with a broomstick in order to make it work?).
I don't think you get it under 200, but 200 isn't a bad thing. Is like having 20 on an FPS.
I've been able to beat many people with pings between 200 and 300. Notably, during a battle against the then-new TBH and corsairs allies, we AW being two (Dab and Me) and they being fourteen. I took 7 of them down. There also was a battleship on our side, but it got blown up after only taking one ship down: the Corsair Battleship:)
(If you find any mistake in my English, please let me know via a PM)
(Really, I speak terrible English, so please, tell me if I make mistakes. I'd like to improve it a bit )
