Well, my two favorites have to be Garry's Mod and the Homeworld series.
Gmod because I can litterally do pretty much whatever I want. Build contraptions, make comics, have massive battles with NPCs and whatnot, or just goof off with the tools. There's always something new and exciting to do.
But Homeworld holds a special place in my heart. It's been a favorite of mine since I first got it waaay back. The space combat was great, the storyline, what little multiplayer I did, classic. Homeworld: Cataclysm was pretty good too. Homeworld 2... not so much, but it had a lot of good mods for it.
Infact, I used to work on the HW2-PDS mod as a fiction writer and general community member before the guy that ran it went crazy and practically destroyed the community overnight. A little while after that, I came here. But PDS was genuinely fun until the community tore apart.
Dreamfall - ( and "the longest journey" ) these two are lovely "classic adventures" ( point and click ) ... while the first part [ the longest journey ] has the far better story, when it comes to player involvement.... - the story of dreamfall is much more intense... sadly, the player feels like he s not doing much but heading from A to B to get another brilliant ingame cutscene.
the game that impressed me most ( meaning, i did not expect ANYTHING from it ) was
Clive Barkers - Undying
a 1st person shooter ( i generally don t like them ) - about a haunted mansion. - its running the old unreal engine and was really epical ( just a bit unfair sometimes )
all of those games are budget priced now and if one hasn t played them yet - i can only recommend them.
There is nothing else that even comes close. Not even Freelancer. I like freelancer, but it's friggin Dwarf Fortress! You can't compete with something like that. It's in a league of it's own.
Freespace 1- A good old game that's vaguely like Starlancer.
Freespace 2- Newer than Freespace 1, but it just doesn't have the atmosphere or story like Freespace 1.
StarLancer- Much like the Freespace series, also technically FreeLancer is the sequel to StarLancer.
Homeworld 1- It has a better much story than HW2 and good game play.
FreeLancer- It's okay, the story gets iffy going to the end, it had much potential but Microsoft made them speed up a lot, so many things were cut out.
