At the moment the 'doodads' (scrap barrels, mini asteroids) you shoot for mining are fairly limited, maybe its nice to expand that a bit (for example bigger parts, etc). I agree that it probably doesn't have much priority as that is purely cosmetic, however I also thought up of the fact that such changes could be made to enable gas mining.
You could use the same mechanic used for normal mining as to shoot a barrel that uses the same model as the "explosive gas cloud".
Shooting a cloud doesn't really make much sense in terms of physics but it adds to the roleplay for the GMG.
What'd also be nice is if the drops could get a bit of variety, such as in radioactive clouds the spawnin of plutonium or something?

We like Feedback just like everybody else. Word has it everybody dislikes us, yet no one ever tells us why. I hope you could.
Have always wondered how to mine gas - the maps show it as mineable, but shooting stuff in a gas field is like asking for your guns to be ripped off.
Radioactive fields should drop things like plutonium, uranium etc... Have wondered why the 'roid field around LD14 doesnt drop MOX - yeah, i know it would decay as fast as you could collect it, but nvrmind.
simple solution - we can use model of explosive gas clouds, add to them same script which have those floating minable parts of junk (or rocks) and just mine them:)

Being a miner myself that would probably be a good RP add on to the game, if it's as simple as Kambei says it is then i don't see why we can't get it done.
Sidenote: MOX is a product of the substances manufactured at LD-14 from the LD-14 field unless you were wondering.
Hmm, interesting idea could work out. Always wanted to see mining taken to the next step.

*imagines noob seeing a minable explosive cloud coming towards him*
I'd love to see a way for Gas to be collected raw from space.
If we stuck exactly to GMG lore we would be mining the gas and dropping it off at Aomori Station. At this point Kishiro takes ovaer as the Trader and buys that H-fuel (lowest price in Sirius) and distributes it across Sirius.
Unfortunately we can't mine that gas.
I didn't want our traders to be just moving H-fuel from Sig-19 to Aomari Station...rather dull.
Instead GMG has been delivering to the same locations that we've seen the Kishiro NPC's deliver.
Aside from a tiny snag with accessing Bretonia, it has worked fine so far, but I'd love to switch over to true mining with our security ships nearby.

Solution:
Use the ice crystal rocks, like the ones you get in ice fields (duh), then add an explosion effect, so you'd be mining frozen gas. The loot could then simpily not be given a model, so you'd see the tractor button was on, and you could tractor it, but you would not be able to see it.
You'd still be able to select it from the loot window though, but you'd just see the white box framed around well, nothing
hm, on shattered world they had NPC going around, by the name of asteroids, and they were basically large asteroids (those static ones). They had no engine, no way to move, and only mining ship could blast them with a special gun.
