My vision darkened again as I saw the detective running over. The entire... mind-share must have only taken a few seconds. There was blankness as I wallowed in the black depths of my mind, the unconscious psyche sending random collections of images and thoughts to my battered mind.
I lay looking up at the world from the bottom on an ocean, black thoughts pressing down on me. Far above I could see light filtering down through the waves, dispersing and dying before the rays reached me.
The terrible pressure bored down on me, seeming to crush me, almost making my head implode. I tried to scream, seeing only a desperate stream of bubbles race upwards from my silent mouth. Then I was rising, floating upwards, the light intensifying.
Suddenly I broke through the waves, a savage storm lashing at me, whips of rain tearing at my skin. I sprawled, hanging in the air, rising gently upwards, buffeted by the raging maelstrom that screamed around me.
Then I broke out of the clouds and continued rising, out of the Dark Planets atmosphere, rising upwards into the heavens. I rolled around the sun, its warmth dispelling the absolute zero temperatures of the void. I breathed in, air flowing from nowhere and everywhere around me as I drifted ever closer to the sun.
Then the whispers started again, muttering and cackling, worshipping the Dark Man, the heart of darkness that resided at the fiery heart of hell. I began to scream as the voices grew in pitch and fever once more, for it was coming.
The sun boiled as madness overtook it, tendrils of flame leaping outwards, twisting and twirling through space. A black spec emerged from the inferno and drifted forward, the sun expanding exponentially, changing colour from a warm yellow to a blood red as it grew. Finally I saw him the dark man who I had dreamed about as the heat blasted at my flesh.
He raised his arm once more, the same words falling from its unholy mouth. My traitor son I have come for you!
Then the sun exploded, the red Giant going supernova, burning me in a cascade of nuclear fire.

I screamed and screamed, buckling against my restraints as the fire tore at me and light flooded into my burning eyes. Hands tried to hold me down, administer medicine as I writhed. Then the heat receded, the light dimming as I clamped my rolling eyes shut, gritting my teeth - tasting the blood from my bitten tongue.
Finally I fell limp as the illusion faded and failed. I opened my eyes again, to see exhausted looking doctors clustered around my bed. Straps were holding me down, across my forehead, chest and legs. My heart still raced as I slowly took stock my surroundings, my eyes flicking from one of the morbid looking doctors to another.
One of them fiddled with a bag of fluid that was attached by a feed to my arm, inserting a syringe into the tube and injecting the contents. My eyes fell shut once more, with my sleep being a drug induced restful oblivion rather than the burning flames of a demonic nightmare.

When I awoke again, I was in a different room in another hospital bed. Warm sunlight streamed through a large window onto my bed. I looked around me, content to lie still without attempting to so much as move.
I heard the door swish open and someone walk through, heels clicking on the floor. I looked up to see an nurse peering at a small machine on a shelf to the right of my bed, probably a vitals monitor. She looked up at me with an obviously fake smile, the sort sales assistants spend weeks practicing, before trotting out again, apparently satisfied I wasnt going to die of something unexpected.
I slumped back down under the sheets again lying perfectly still until I went numb and had to sit up. The sun was casting dull red rays through the window now, as it sunk slowly below the horizon. I sat cross legged on top of my covers staring at the cable jutting out of my arm, feeding me something, until a doctor wearing a lab coat bustled in. He was wearing a grave expression on his face.
Mr. Aldridge, we have been talking to the crew of the Eastbourne, and we know you collapsed twice. Here in the hospital you had some sort of seizure, after which you fell into a short, well, coma lasting two days.
While you were unconscious, we ran a brain scan on you, and we found something... odd. I gazed at him coolly, not wanting to give away any of my feelings of internal panic. Mr. Aldridge, have you ever taken the narcotic Cardimine? We need to know this for your own safety.
No I replied, slightly offended. The doctor sighed and removed his glasses wearily.
Look, your brain activity while you were unconscious was disturbing; it was hyperactive in some areas while inactive to the point of being dead in others. Weve seen similar patterns in overdose victims of Cardimine. If you dont tell us the truth now, well be forced to take a blood test and legal action if you are found to have the substance in your blood stream. The doctor stared at me like an owl for a moment before walking around to the other side of the bed to check the machine the nurse had previously been looking at.

I slept again through the night, with the staff choosing to dope me again, lest I fall back into the nightmares that had plagued me previously. The peaceful black oblivion had again rolled over me, calming and gentle.
Time seemed to blur and warp and then I was awake again. There was a dull throbbing pain in my arm, so I opened one eye to see a faint mark where a syringe had been inserted. I assumed it was the blood test. As I listened carefully, I could hear two doctors talking in hushed tones outside my door, their silhouettes being cast onto the blinds. They obviously thought I was still asleep.
Look, there is something wrong with him. You cant discharge him! You recited the Hippocratic Oath just like the rest of us, and if you let him go, something will happen and that will be a breach of your oath if you could have stopped it. Please, just let us keep him here for a little longer!
I cant. Hes had the discharge paper signed already. Luke, Im sorry, but as of now we cant see anything wrong with him so legally theres no reason why we can hold him.
Oh please! You saw the brain activity readouts! They were through the roof! He should have been a vegetable! There is, something, going on in that kid's head, we have to keep him.
There was an uncomfortable pause as both parties squared up to each other, before the second speaker seemed to sag and give in.

I lay on my back, looking upwards at the white dome that hummed above me. They had placed me in a huge scanning machine that would even now be scanning my brain for anomalies. There were a number of technicians and doctors analysing the results as they were produced.
Now then, were going to add some pictorial stimuli to activate areas of your brain so the machine can get a better reading on them, Ok? I recognised his voice as the Dr. Luke that had been outside my room.
The white machine was pitched into darkness as the lights were turned off, and pictures were projected onto the curving surface instead. Pictures flashed, faster than I could comprehend them, faces, scenes, buildings, cars leaving the memory of a recollection, a dull feeling of comprehension.
There were some worried murmurs from outside the machine as the assorted specialists got their data. Then the pictures began to take a far more sinister form. My home burning, pictures of my father, the Dauntless burning, Corsair raiders, then the symbol.
That image did not fade, but hung in the air in front of me. The symbol I had seen tattooed on the dock workers throat and hung around Hans neck. It loomed, black spikes erupting from its pointed tips, blood seeming to seep from its form.
The voices from the outside took a panicked tone, then something cracked follow by a choir of screams. There was a hiss as sparks erupted from computer consoles, burning those around them. My mind seemed to split as the voices invaded once more, roaring through my mind like an unstoppable storm.

The voices so many voices howled through my mind, threatening to rend my sanity in two. I screamed, a solid wedge of pain driving into my temple. Then I could sense Them, the panicking men and women, the doctors and psychologists that thought they could learn to understand me. I could see their life-lights, tiny white pinpricks of fire, contrasting against the empty eternal death of the void.
From my ethereal view point I could see a hurricane of light surrounded me, pouring into me, the pain still torturing me. I writhed and contorted, hoping that I would just die and have an end to the agony, then it ceased.
The pinpricks of light were instantly extinguished and the hurricane of light rolled over then, flattening the guttering light in an instant. Something inside me was directing the energy outward, towards Them. I was like a beacon, an antenna pulling in energy from the *Community* only to unleash it on those around me.
Something changed subtly in my mind, as I tried to harness it, control the power, direct it out to kill, maim, destroy! This was power! Then there was the feeling of flying backwards as the hurricane died to a gentle breeze, my consciousness pulled back into my body.
There was a sudden sense of loneliness and weight as I shuddered, still twitching from the mental overload. A blood vessel in my nose burst, leaking blood down my cheek. Then there was silence as I fell once more.

I awoke after what must have been a minute, dazed, with a throbbing headache that made spots dance before my eyes when I tried to move. I curled up into a ball but the pain intensified causing me to throw up over the shiny plastic surface I lay on.
Slowly I wormed my way out of the tunnel, wincing as the suction pads attaching wires to my head were pulled off and fell back to the floor. I cleared the machine and sat up which made my head spin. Nausea struck me again, so I cradled my head in my hands, wishing the feeling would pass.
Then I became aware of the deadly silence. No chattering doctors, no humming of machines. Full of dread I peered through my fingers, surveying the scene of carnage around me. People lay sprawled across the floor, their faces contorted in terror and agony. Blood pooled across the laminated tiles from ruptured eyes, ears and wounds people had inflicted on themselves as they clawed at their faces.
I pulled off the last wires that still attached me to the machine and peered around in shock, trying to remember what had happened when the voices had returned. I began to shake all over, cold sweat drenching me. I stood up, wobbling slightly, before picking my way around the bodies towards the door.
I had to get out before someone found the remains.

"I am a genius. I could be anything at all, with half
the chance. But today I am going to change the world.
Somethings world. The cat avoids me. The cat
knows I am a genius, and has hidden itself."
I peered at the house through the bushes, looking at the lights that beamed out through the darkness. I clutched the hospital gown that hung around me, trying to ward away the chill that had set in for the night.
This was certainly Harmans house. His car was parked outside and I could hear a dog barking inside. He had often talked of a dog during seminars. I crept closer across the gravelled drive. There were curtains pulled across the glass, but the light still shone through. I could see a silhouette moving around inside.
I wondered, why was I even here? To find out the meaning of that rune I had spotted in Rhienland? That hardly seemed significant when I had the overlying issues of being hunted by the Bretonian authorities for murder. I had seen the constabulary flocking to the hospital, sirens blaring, lights flashing as I mounted the first hill of the Southern Downs, lights winking in the darkness. I could only presume I was now a wanted man.
Still, I lacked any other conceivable purpose. The space port had probably been temporarily locked down to prevent anyone escaping, so what else was there for me to do?
The door, a thick oak piece, loomed over me, so I knocked, sending a dull boom echoing through the woodwork. I waited for a moment, glancing around nervously.
Then there was the clinking of a bolt being drawn back and the door swung open.

Steven? What on earth are you doing here at this hour of the night? I jigged anxiously on his doorstep for a moment.
Please, can I come in? Harman looked at me sternly for a moment, before stepping aside and gesturing for me to come in. As I came into the light, he noticed the hospital smock I was still wearing.
What have you been doing? I glanced around nervously, stepping into a warm room full of heavy looking padded furniture. A large dog with short grey fur and huge floppy ears was curled up on a rug in front of a fire.
Its a long story but I desperately need your help. People are hunting me down! I failed to mention, who exactly it was perusing me, which would have likely resulted in my expulsion from the house and a phone call to the BPA.
Harman flapped for a moment before continuing. Well, at least I can give you some clothes. If you go upstairs, second door on the right, is my sons room. There should be some clothes that fit you up there. Hes left home now, so he shouldnt mind.
As I turned to leave the room, I noticed the dog watching me warily with its deep amber eyes, hackles up. Animals generally reacted poorly to me. It was as if there was an aura that repulsed them surrounded me.
I pushed the mutt from my mind and proceeded upstairs to get some clothes. I also needed to rest. Id had to trek almost four miles across open fields and hills to reach the estate, and the exertion had exhausted me.

It all fitted. Loosely. I glanced longingly at the bed, wanting to simply lie down and sleep for a day, but I knew I couldnt. Grudgingly I tore myself away from the room and trekked back down the stairs towards the living room once more. Harman was seated waiting for me.
Now then Steven, I do believe you owe me an explanation as to why you are here. I considered telling him the truth just to see the expression it would provoke yes, I killed a room full of people with my mind! Of course I couldnt do that. So I improvised.
I found something. I have no idea what it was, but it was covered in symbols. I believe they are of DomKavosh origin, so I thought I could seek you out to look for a translation. I noticed his ears prick up at the mention of a possible Artefact, probably willing to ignore the fact I arrived in a hospital smock. This looked like a winning formula.
There was one symbol in particular that was continiously repeated across the objects surface. I patted down my trouser pockets looking for my communicator where I had previously stored the picture, only to realize it had been abandoned at the hospital. Inwardly I groaned. I was going to have to attempt to remember it, hoping none of the intricate details would be lost. Do you have any paper?
He nodded eagerly and jumped up, hurrying over to a bureau, pulling out a wad of paper and rushing back over. He offered me a pen and I began to sketch. As I drew to completion, I could see he was smiling. His hands clutching at each other. I assumed hed seen it before.
Do you recognise it? He nodded, obviously curious as to where Id seen it before.
