Alaska is not a guard system, and will not be treated as one to provide capital ships with a special ability to interdict traders.
There you have it.
Unofficial stance is that anyone who smuggles through Alaska is a class A wanker.
Swap out the dread for a gunboat and go to town I suppose.
mb52/Johann are right, it's stupid that people can get through a secret system without getting shot at. But Kindred is also right, "trapping" people into breaking the rules is low, very low.
' Wrote:Kindred has the right point. Capital ships, under the rules, cannot attack smugglers. Physically blocking a jump gate makes the trader: die to npcs or bait them into ramming the capital out of the way.
Baiting players into breaking the rules = a big no-no
I'm not forcing them to ram me. If they dont want to break server rules, they should turn around and leave. (Not that I'd report them anyways, but its the principal of the matter)
EDIT- if a criminal is driving down a highway in a stolen car, and sees a police blockade ahead, what does he do? the smart one turns around and runs the other way.

Don't do it.
Get a gunboat.
I assure you that your clever antics will end poorly.
Er, so why? I honestly don't see the issue. (I personally won't use a ram as a reason to report someone) but it only makes sense to block the jumpgate.
I've been doing it for over half a year now and there has never been an issue yet. Of course back then it was just a way to slow them down from quick docking. (which is incredibly OORP btw)

*grins* Look. Here's my two cents. If the LN/LSF spot someone smuggling through Zone 21 they should be able to rip the ship in half with a carrier, kidnap the pilot, strap them into chairs and subject them to cosmetic product testing for the rest of the miserable, itchy lives.
But you can't do that, as per some rather sad rules.
But if what we're concerned about if efficacy in addition to maintaining RP, squatting with your battleship in front of a jumpgate refusing to move and grant them passage is a rather poor show as well.
It's a battleship, not a padlock.
Firstly, folks have a right to dock. If they engage autopilot and ram your ship out of the way, which is going to happen within the space of a few seconds, they're doing nothing wrong. It's not a combat situation. They're simply looking to carry on with their pathetic oorp lives.
Secondly, just bring out the gunboat when you're going to be dealing with smugglers. There aren't many transports out there that smile when a anti-cap liberty gunboat is 300 meters behind them belching holy fire. It would, simply put, be so much more effective than attempting to picture your grizzled Naval Commander furrowing his brow over official orders to -annoy- slack jawed smuggling traipsing through Zone 21.

So, instead of actually roleplaying with them, you're going to bait them into breaking the rules? Hrm....Very relevant oh, and Quite relevant.
As a pirate, this shows me a lot about how the lawfuls think. Use a fighter (Not that hard), use a bomber (Very easy), use a Gunboat (Moderately easy), it's just that simple. If you think you need a BS to destroy traders, maybe you should try and PvP sometime and figure out what the armor/shield values actually mean.
And I'm sorry for being a prick (Not really), but this is just very low, in my eyes...
[8:32:45 PM] Dusty Lens: Oh no, let me get that. Hello? Oh it's my grandma. She says to be roleplay.
[12:49:19 AM] Elgatodiablo: You know its nice that you have all that proof and all, Bacon... but I just don't believe you.
Yeah bacon, I'm sorry you know nothing of how I RP and how I fly my ships. You should also read the countless times I said I wouldn't report anyone.. >.<
@ Dusty, thank you for the clear post, I can understand it from that point of view. But I still feel that a dreadnought being in the area should be able to do something.
Lets change things, if say a pirate fleet is coming and want to use the gate, could the lawfuls then block it (and force the pirates to destroy the "padlock" before going through?
Honestly at this point I'm just trying to find a use for this dreadnought, which sees no action, since its so rare a pvp situation comes up for me. As for RPing with them, I try, I never get any responses, just a quick dock then a PM laughing and mocking.

Thats actually kinda of a funny statement, because in SP Battleships are repeatedly found blocking TL/JG and in a couple cases they wouldn't let you dock without clearance to either.
