If someone says something that you as a person find insulting (not you as a character), PM the offender and request, politely, that they tone it down. If they refuse, then you have grounds to take action.
On the other end, if you intend to say something, anything, that will insult the person behind the character, and not just the character itself, don't.
"Learn to fly" when directed at someone who is RPing a bad pilot is not an insult, and is acceptable RP. The same phrase, when directed at someone who is, in real life, a worse pilot than you, but is not RPing as such, is bad form.
You know, i can never find what to say to those danged starflier people who shoot at LBC's and other caps, along with regular fighters. Right in front of manhattan. Now that they have their own system im sure its not as bad, but still...

Actually that was the term used in the rescue the president mission in SP. Uttered by the president.
Been here since Discovery 4.77 (lurk mode engaged)
Zapp Wrote:I have recently met and discussed with Atalawohisdi the trader that flies the Caribe. Just so everyone knows, I engaged in Sigma 13. He flies through half the system before going back to New Berlin, where he cruises from one side of the system to the other, hugging the sun as close as he can. All the while, he flies near Battleships trying to scrape me off. I finally send out the white flag, and move back to Sigma 13. However, it was a ruse, and he bit. Knowing his trade route, I interdicted the trade lane and the chase began anew. It ended, an hour after it began, with me retreating, out of Countermeasures and getting very irritated.
He kept boasting how he has never been caught; I'd like to see him beat until he begs to pay, then beaten some more.
Well, I would guess that "bastard" is okay as long as it's RP. In any case, I didn't get banned for shouting "YOU'LL NEVER GET ME ALIVE, XENO BASTARDS!". It was the April 1st, though, so I got divided by zero - probably solely because I drew attention to myself.:)
I've always had trouble with "wanker", since the way I hear it, it might as well be "twiddlybum". On the other hand, UK people actually find it offensive, so I try to err on the safe side and not use it. Then again - anyone reporting you for "wanker" without trying to PM you first is... well, a twiddlybum.
You can discuss how you are the bastard son but if you call someone an utter bastard, you may end up getting sanctioned (Again a bit of a grey area since the word is used a few times in the Vanilla game by both story characters and NPCs)
I only just learned that 'bugger' is fairly offensive to Brits.
So, yeah, I'ma stop using that.

The book might be slightly out of date, but I'd still like to be safe on that count.
