Well, I could actually do with some clarification here as well. How much time should you give someone for an engagement notice to "sink in"? For example, a pirate in a barghest is sitting at a tradelane when a vigilante in an eagle pops out of it. They start having an RP conversation, with the vigilante telling the pirate to stop disrupting the trade lane or he will open fire. The pirate responds, saying that he doesn't want to leave the trade lane, and ends his sentence with "and now, it's time for you to die" (or something similar), as an engagement notice. Does the pirate then have the right to instantly launch an SN/MR combo at the vigilante (who is likely to be standing still, typing another line of RP) or should the pirate allow some time for the message to "sink in" and for the vigilante to start moving?
Also, what are the rules regarding something along the lines of: A pirate (yes, again) is sitting at a trade lane. A trader appears this time and, when presented with a demand, is completely silent. The pirate tells the trader that he has five seconds to respond or the pirate will open fire. Five seconds pass with no response. Does his threat count as an engagement notice, or should a second notice be given?
Your question about giving people 5 seconds can easily be solved by what i used to do (i no longer pirate as much), say "if you do not reply in 5 secs, i will kill you", go on to say "5", "4", "3", "2", "1", if he doesnt respond, shot him.
I'd tell him he has 5 seconds, then say "suit yourself". Some rule lawyers may argue that, but I can guarantee that anyone with common sense can tell that "Suit yourself" in that case is obvious warning. Of course, if they make for the next lane... Screw the "suit yourself", they're dieing.

what really bugs me is when i fire a CD at someone. this counts as attacking. they then open fire on me. this puts me at a disadvantage becasue i am almost always typing out some RP.
bloody nubs
I never counted a CD as a form of engagement, sure it is annoying, but is a pirate about to let his target just fly away?
I have also been killed without a "proper" engagement. I was in my merc char after this pirate in the NY system. I warned him that I was after him, and after I found him I sat there waiting for some RP. He ended up opening fire on my ship. That opening salvo was enough to drop my shields. I died in the end and he claimed he opened up In self defence cause I was after him. Is this a valid excuse and was my former warnings enough to be called an engagement?
