Ookay. We just proved that gunboats don't suck, now we have to show that they ain't that great?
Pairs of gunboats, please line up for some cruiser, let's run a few tests? You know, there's gunboats and gunships, and saying that "gunboats are too good" is a bit weird since there are huge differences between the individual gunboat types. It's hard to compare a corsair or bretonian gunboat with the light gunships like the rogue, hacker and bounty hunter one.
Personally I defeated a pair of gunboats and a skilled bomber using a liberty cruiser and a pair of freelance fighters... and note that the GBs and bomber traded nanobots all the time...
Can we have some solid proof of what you're saying, Dab? Perhaps a video or something? I mean, you may be right... but I'd like to see it for myself... because I've been flying gunboats, and cruisers / BS hurt a lot. And I observed that from light cruiser perspective as well.
Again, you might be right but I'm still not convinced.
It's an interesting coincidence that battleship secondaries have about the same range as gunboat EMP / razors. They are even 200mps faster than cruier turrets. The damage rating is the same as of primary turrets, but they ue more energy. Personally I'd like to see two or even three gunboats defeat a battleship with full secondaries and a battle razor. Might make for a cool video, really.
Gunboats can basically thwack capships and fighters, but when taking on the capships, most cruisers can bash you in less thatn 5 seconds. I havn't tried in a battleship.
Gunboats will always be the best capship because they are agile enough to be flown as fighters, and with most guns facing forward like fighters, that's how they'll be flown. Cruiser+ -can- be flown like fighters, but the real strength of RL/other video game caps is that they can fire on multipule targets, which just can't be acheived with FL's limited coding.
in my bhg GS, with pulse's and razers, i can kill gunboats vary well, infact, today i beat slav with his capVII rogue GB.(he gave up after i began to pwn him, but i would have smashed him without using a single bot/bat in the end.)
i have been in fights againsts battleships in my gunship, but all i ever do is dodge, untill they stop shooting me and shoot the other targets, like bombers.
also, two bombers can kill a BS, two gunboats can kill a bs, two cruisers can kill a BS, and of course, two BS's can kill a BS.
if you nerf the range down to 1k, then it will just be a little harder to double team a BS, but it will still happen.
and yes, i fly my GS like a fighter.

My only real complaint about gunboats is that shield regen differences makes them impossible to fight in a transport. I used to be a menace in a PTrans, but not anymore.
This was likely intended, but it makes me sad that being a great combat transport pilot isn't as rewarding as it used to be.
Well, I must be elsewhere since it seems there are far less gunboats now than in 4.84, when every other ship was one.
The only thing that seems to be strange with gunboats now is that there is no reason to not use Razors. They seem to be the new Cerbs. Advice for killing bombers? Blast them with a couple razors to instakill them. Bigger ships? Razors and pulses.

Imho, gbs are nothing but cannon fodder in this current mod. Really. They usually are the first to blow up. If they are tweeked (i.e. nerfed) any further, they'll be nothing more than glorified SHFs. Same goes for the weapons.
How on earth does a BS get bested by two gbs? When I flew a BS, I used BRs to zap gunboats. Two BRs will ruin a gunboat pilot's day.
Gunboats are not created equal. Some are more attuned to AA tasks. Others are heavy hitters against other capships. If the community decides that all gbs should concentrate on killing fighters and bombers, gb agility needs to be increased considerably - less on some models, more on others.
Concerning the gb BR and Pulse turrets - they seem to be analogous to cruiser/BS mortars and pulse turrets. Thus the longer range compared to the normal gb turrets.
And frankly, I don't think gbs are spammed - at least not in a painfully obvious manner.

That's just how it works. The biggest ships die first in group fights. Battleships go down before gunboats. Does that make them cannonfodder? Light fighters tend to survive right until the end. Does this make them tanks?

Uh so tell me.. why do the vanilla gunboats, the Rheinland, Bretonian and Kusari gunboats all have forward guns for taking out bigger ships?

I completely disagree that gunboats are anti-fighter only ships, they should be allowed to specialize in loadouts to take on individual targets.
