I believe the language problems have gotten worse the last 2-3 weeks, I have no idea why, but every time I play, I have to take in account that I'll need at least one hour to explain to various people that they need to go to the forums and read the rules. Most of these people don't speak English, so, all I can do is try and explain it in a different language. Only problem is, I only speak Dutch, English, French and German, none of the Slavic languages.
PS: If you ever find any mistakes in my English, please tell me, I'm trying to improve and there's only so much I can learn by myself.
I dont have a problem with people Trying to Role Play. I have a problem with those who can only say "English no!"
People who just ignore you, people who are talking in russian to you in private chat. And you cant even write the letters into a Translator. Because you dont have the Keys for those letters. I've even seen people with Russian Letters in their names! This makes me impossible to type their name.

Guys, ignoring the rules and pretending to "not understand English" is one thing, actually trying to RP with your limited knowledge of the language is another. People that try to RP without having a good grasp of english should not be banned just because they cannot understand the late XVI-century speech patterns someone mentioned above (and which are ridiculously out-of-place from RP-point of view)... Ban people who disregard the rules and use "no engl" as an excuse. Let's say you see someone with an incompatible ID/ship/equipment/whatever. You tell them to fix that problem, and all you get in response is "don't speak english". Instead of trying to get foreigners banned for all eternity, you could take a screenshot, file a sanction report and simply say "read rules". Anyone who can say "no english" understands that. Not to mention there's plenty of english-speaking people who type like 4-year olds. You don't request all pirates to be banned just because one taxed you several times in a row, do you?
PS: My native language isn't English, but I didn't learn it just to play FL.
' Wrote:Can I get a 'Konnichiwa' from my brothers in the GMG?
How about a 'Bonjour' from the Gallic Brigands?
Seriously, if you're going to enforce this rule, where do we draw the line? How do we tell the difference between a German RM pilot who's using Babelfish and a Portugese KNF player who speaks english as a second language...?
Most people will know basic words like 'Konnichiwa' and 'Bonjour', if not it doesn't take much effort to realise that these are greetings if given in the correct context. Words that are common and well known, that fit in with house language is fine, though after responding to the 'Bonjour', I might often receive a long French sentence. So far I've RPed this as "I'm sorry, I didn't pass my ancient French class." or something similar.
The problem is not foreign speaking players, or even players who just don't speak English, it is those who do not partake in RP in any form, who will not RP their lack of understanding of the language. This is on them, it should be up to them on an RP server to find some way to express the fact that they don't speak English that also fits in with RP, instead of giving us a long explanation that we simply don't understand.
The majority of players on the Discovery server speak English. The rule is there to protect the greatest happiness of the greatest number.
' Wrote:The Freelancer community is shrinking all the time, there are many servers but all are almost empty. Why people from all the World come here? They want to play with others. It doesn't make sense to host specific language servers and to play with 5 people. So, even if some people don't present good RP because of their lack of language knowledge, they fill your server and they make freelancer longer life.
Very good point.

That's a problem? I'm sorry you only speak four languages... Poor you. Anyone worth anything speaks five. Any less and you're just silly.

Wish I spoke four languages...
Believe me, when you live in a country this small and your native language is this insignificant, you need all the languages you can get. Off those four I mentioned, three are official in Belgium.
Simple: Go onto a Counter Strike, WoW or any other server where people talk english.
And just go talk russian, turkish, dutch, spanish or german with them. You will reciever a "English Please", if you still dont stop you get a warning. And after that you get a kick. Its just everywhere. English is required. Almost every country, or even every country is having English lessons at school.
I dont even know how they play this mod then? IDs, Ship informations and others are in english, sure the Vanilla stuff is still in your language, but how do they get this? Yesterday i had a Kusari Luxury Liner with a Recruit ID Docking on Perth (Bretonia Base) and getting some Wildlife. And we are recieving a "ENGLISH NO!"
while telling him he shouldnt dock.

It is rather sad to see people going "extreme" in their judgement. An understandable English usage is necessary, true, but people can learn. I know some new members of the Order| back from their recruit / indy days with a seriously bad English "application". Now they are ok with it and in time they will be better by observing.
There are far more better users of "English" than the native speakers here as well as worse. Best path would be to give a hand rather than going for an "inquisition".
I can help in translating the rules to Turkish if you want. I know its not the majority of this server but I saw certain people speaking Turkish here, so it may help.

Gobble-Gobble? :) Oh, sorry, you said Turkish, not Turkey. (I know, I have a strange sense of humor at times. And my wife does know basic Turkish, but not much anymore - she was there for 4 years when she was a child.)
And for those of you who are not native English speakers, and asking us if we know how hard it is to learn a foreign language - Hai, Da, Si.... Spanish in High School for me, Russian in College, and Japanese since then due to business. With a smattering of French, German, and Latin in there as well. But that's not the point here.
As Johann did state -
Quote:But yeah, players who can't speak English can't properly roleplay, I don't go and play on a German server because I know I wouldn't contribute anything to their community and I'd just be a nuisance, I expect the same respect on this English server.
I may be putting words in his mouth, but he's NOT knocking people for not speaking English. He's knocking people because they won't or can't properly Role Play here.
Quote:I commend the people who make a serious attempt to RP with a language that is not their own and welcome them wholeheartedly.
Exactly! If you mis-spell a word, or use the wrong word, not a big deal. If you just put out 'No English' and continue on your merry way, you're going to get a CD up your tailpipe and a whole lot of grief.

English has become a mainstream language in this day and age, and UNFORTUNATELY THE MISCONCEPTION is that those who do not speak fluent english, are not intelligent....
Unfortunately, USA is lacking in many things, especially education....
He did NOT say that people were unintelligent. He said that people who don't (or WON'T) speak English on a RolePlay server that is based on English Only can't RolePlay here properly. If I went to a Cantonese Server of Freelancer, even though I might know the mechanics of the game, how well do you think I'd do in player interactions since I speak no Cantonese?
It's not like there aren't pop-ups in game saying things about what language to speak here, true?
And your last comment - our general education system is lousy. I agree. But that has no relevance to this discussion.

example:
When i was younger my parents hosted 2 foreign exchange students, they still visit to this day.....
1 was from japan, fluently spoke 10 dialects of chinese, japanese, korean, spanish, and french....also she could understand perfect english, written and oral, HOWEVER she had an accent and this caused the ever seen foreigner=DUMB stereotype.
in most countries at least 3 languages are REQUIRED during what we americans would consider the 6-12 levels....
the ability to speak proper english syntax has nothing to do with ones LIMITLESS IMAGINATION
SO out of pure Curiousity....how many languages can you fluently speak/understand?
.....
Okay.... You obviously completely misunderstood my post, and I'm not even sure what you are getting at, Agmen summed up what I was saying pretty well.
Oh, and as per your question, I can speak exactly one language fluently.
