This -is- a Liberty Carrier, of course it would have similar structure design to the Battleship, namely the Axe-Head and the Engine.
To the second point about the open-ended docking port... You ever watch Star Wars, or play Battlefront?
You can't shoot into the hangars there due to a shield-like "screen" covering the otherwise entirely open hangar. Remember, Freelancer is set in the age of shields. Not present-day "Point-Click-Hit" styled shooting where as long as you hit -Something-, you can do damage.
As for the "square thingies" infront of the bridge, i'd compare them best to... Arches, nothing special, mainly an
Not necessarily. The engine, yes (that's the same as the current ones for the main Battleships, Carriers, and I think Assault Battlecruisers), but the Axe-Head has only been seen on the Battleship.
I spent years of my life on Battlefront, and I got to thinking of the huge flaws in that design (no offense to the modeler). Yes, we live in an age of shields (or at least our characters do), but they would still do the smart thing- namely concentrate fire on the shields, and once they're done shoot into the big gaping hole in the side of the ship, destroy any fighters landed and rip through the hull. At least, RP-wise.
And, finally, thankyou! Arches was the term I was looking for, I don't know why I couldn't think of it!

Not once did I say other liberty caps had that design. But, the Carrier is a battleship classed vessel. So again "of course it would have similar structure design to the battleship"
2: Thats all well and good but....your thinking of the ship's shield, and the hangar's "shield" as the same shield.
Think this way, the ship's shield is projected around it, that would be hard to maintain, correct so of course, it could be shot down.
However, the hangar shields, arent projected outside the ship, but are contained as a type of wall where there would otherwise be metal plating and whatnot. Simply not having to project it around such a huge area would make it easier to maintain, allowing for a separate, and even smaller generator, to hold that hangar's shield up no matter what hit it. My opinion atleast. I warn you, I'm no 9001+ IQ'ed Scientist that could explain the truth of why something would or wouldnt work.
Arguing over this using real life information is pointless.
The most logical and most militarily effective design for a ship is a sphere.
Freelancer is as close to reality as Mary Poppins.
Honestly I do not believe a proper design can be made for liberty if we hold to the requirements of having an axe head at the front or that it must in some way resemble a modern navy vessel. As I recall the only vanilla liberty ship design that has an axe head or looks remotely like a real world ship is the dreadnought. The rest of liberty ships are actually very abstract. The only thing they all share in common is art deco influence.
Perhaps what we should be modeling a liberty carrier off of is architectural and not naval design.
