Before I start: I'm putting this here and not on the dev board because I know this won't ever get implemented and doesn't fit into (Vanilla)FL. Its just to compare and discuss the pros and cons and get some other opineons.
I've played the Privateer: The Reckoning mod for Freelancer the past few days because I was at my granmothers place without any acess to internet, and I've seen some interesting things regarding weapon stats there that I'd like to hear some other opineons about.
Mind, I'm not talking about damage here, since the average ships armor ratings in the Reckoning mod are much lower than in Discovery.
Those guns have high Projectile speeds and really slow refire rates.
I'll throw some numbers in to explain what I mean.
Laser - refire 3.33, speed 1400 m/s
Mass Driver - refire 2.86, speed 1100 m/s
Meson Blaster - refire 2.86, speed 1300 m/s
Particle Cannon - refire 2.00, speed 1000 m/s
Neutron Gun - refire 1.45, speed 900 m/s
Tachyon Cannon - refire 2.50, speed 1250 m/s
Ion Cannon - refire 1.67, speed 1200 m/s
Plasma Gun - refire 1.39, speed 840 m/s
Fusion Gun - refire 2.00, speed 750 m/s
Starting with the weakest and ending with the stongest gun.
These stats actually make you aim a lot more and shoot a lot less, but also make these carefully aimed shots actually hit the opponent. I've only tried this against NPCs, since the mod doesn't support multiplayer, but those NPCs are at a similar level than Disco ones (they use regens, joust and strafe a lot).
I really enjoyed these fights and I'm curious what others think about this.

Did you actually read what I said?
And don't call Privateer a mutant, its a real classic, though you are probably too young to even know it.

Is it really necessary to be this much of a jerk? I doubt I'm functioning at 100% at the moment, but it seems blindingly obvious to me that the entire purpose of this topic is to discuss what the advantages and disadvantages would be of adding a system like what he talked about to Discovery, something that I happen to favor.
The problem with the guns in Disco is that to really, fully take advantage of most of them (and not just the 2 or 4 refire guns), you not only need to be able to actually hit a variety of fast-moving targets with your slow shots, but you also have to keep them in your sights long enough to take full advantage of your high refire rate guns. Unless your opponent is really sad, and flies in a straight line, that just isn't going to happen.
If I remember right, there's been some talk on these forums for some time about the possibility of boosting fighter weapon speed, so as to improve the likelihood that peoples' shots may hit. Also, some people already think that higher-reward, higher-risk weapons (such as the aforementioned razor) are the way to go at the moment, so reducing the refire rate and possibly increasing damage, in addition to the speed changes, adds that quality to every weapon, to some extent...meaning we no longer have this bizarre system where, for some reason, people decide to use energy torpedo launchers as their main significant weapon in fighter-on-fighter dogfights.
I've found that, with some exceptions, most fighter-on-fighter battles aren't really that fun, because most of your shots miss and the ones that hit don't really do a whole lot of damage. Changing that around so that all of your shots have a good chance to hit if you aim properly, and substantially reward you in the damage department (even though they don't fire very often), would seem to be a step in the right direction...particularly since it's basically what we're already doing for capital ships, and I feel that that system is working quite well.
I wouldn't just toss this idea out immediately; I feel like it has a lot of potential.
...of course, I feel that way about a lot of other concepts that'll never, ever have a chance of getting into this mod.
I approve and applaud this idea. It is way too hard to hit targets with the current fighter gun projectile speeds. I wouldn't even mind if ALL the guns in the game got a speed increase. When you do score a hit, the enemy can do enough dodging to easilly replenish his sheild, even if he's out of batts. Most of these guns ARE laserlight type weapons after all... Recently I've found myself swapping out my transport turrets (on my transport of course) with less powerful fighter turrets, simply because they have a greater projectile speed and thus destroy fightercraft better than my more powerful transport turrets.
Of course I understand the need to ballance by slowing the refire rate further to compensate for the increased speed of the projectiles, and I think that wouldn't be terribly horrible either. The only area I would take issue with slowing refire rate would be the gatling and chain guns. In those cases I think all of those guns need to have a minimum of 16 for their refire rate.
Anyway, this is all to say that I like the idea and wouldn't mind at all if it was implimented.
' Wrote:Fighters weapons need a real buff on the speed projectile, yes. But extra slow refire... ?
I was up for that, but later I wondered about wouldnt it effect diffrence between piloting skills and aiming. I mean if you buff fast guns a bit you may reach critical point in which those wepaons would be overpowered. And buffing slower weapons would just make them same good as previuos faster guns.
Besides Im a afraid that this might soft a diffrence between skilled pvpers and those who are newer to the game.
Now bash me as long as you want (weedy you have your chance, I know you want this) with "pvp-whore" name, but I just want to keep old-school freelancer shooter incorporated in roleplay.

Well if you ask for opinions I gave mine. Then I got flamed becouse of it and saying "this is not for the mod". What you expect I will say then?
Chill out and hide your arrogance.
Or I need to clearify my opinion agian? I dislike everything which would drasticly change old style combat engine.
I agree, if we could boost the damage on lvl 1-5 +7 and 8 guns and then add more speed to all the levels. THEN even a light fighter would be dangeorus...
Also i think that the refire should be "standarized" at 3.03 as its a good compromise...
Now i used only lvl 9 as examples, but its because thats the relevant class of change
Clearly we see that the 3.03 is the best choice considering good refire, damage and also the fact that 2.0 means you gotta snipe your shots, but 4.0 is at the edge of being a "spraying" weapon.
So i vote for getting more 3.03 weapons as its what i consider as the best choice between speed and damage
Balance is not to make all weapons same, but to balance the advanatas and disadvanatges that overal would be quite equel. For you 3 refire guns are better for others 6 refire guns are the best. You can't implent more 3 refire guns just becouse you want so. Besides most of all guns comes from vanila. Or atleast are bound to them in one way or another.
