I am against the current Miner ID, simply because it's too open to abuse and it actually hurts mining, imho. Here's why: indy miners, who probably don't know one another personally like you all do on the forums, will be afraid to team up and work together for fear of getting backstabbed by one another. As it stands, there's nothing stopping douchebag-minded folks from turning on their buddies, doing a /renameme, and repeating the process. And while I suppose there's an element of realism to it, is it any fun for the people involved? (Well, I suppose it's fun for the perpetrators, of course)

As someone else pointed out in this thread, there's plenty of 'realistic' things that are just not permitted by the rules in the spirit of fairplay. There's just too many criteria that have to be met for the current Miner ID to work properly - every miner must go and seek out an escort, players must suppress their prickish desire to turn around and rob their mining buddies, and I'm sure there's more but I'm too lazy to think of it right now.

So, good intentions but it's too open for abuse. Keep it simple and leave pirating to the Pirates, eh?

They need more than one escort, actually.

Hegemon + Bomber is still < Ptrans. Well, maybe not, but the Hegemon will still be dead before the Bomber finishes killing the Ptrans.

I just see that as an incentive to join a faction, just like in real life, if you hook up with an established company, you end up risking much less in whatever venture you are in.

Factions have far fewer rights and abilities than the generic ID in this case.

but gain a greater mining bonus, access to teamwork, camaraderie, escorts, and trust.

I'd say that's a fair trade-off.

Or it will encourage more people to make flame threads :D

Nah, as nice as it would be, I don't think faction enrollment will increase. Maybe a few dedicated people will join mining factions, but what I see happening is that pirate miners will become the only miners around(or at least the predominant ones). And what incentive do they have to join a corporation anyway? Possibly an escort here or there, sure, but at the cost of being able to pirate whoever and then turning around and selling the loot wherever. And joining a faction should not be a prerequisite for enjoying one of the core elements of the game, mining. The beauty of Disco is when complete strangers get together and work as a team; the current system will just lead to people being distrustful of one another because how do you know if that guy who just helped you blast rocks for the past hour won't simply turn on you.

Not to mention, this makes the Pirate ID obsolete.

Thank you, Cossack. I don't think I could have put it nicer myself. Actually, I know I couldn't have. Kudos.

Lolpirates?

Lets just go over a short list of people that started this whole ore piracy with the miner ID thing:

Dusty Lens
Cannon
Virus
Jihad Joe
Mwerte
Zelot
baconsoda
Hribek
and last but not least, pipboy

Point out the lolpirates in that group and win a prize! No really, point them out.

Granted I'm sure others have taken up the cause, but that was the original group that got everyone making such a fuss. And people in that group as far as I know still do probably the majority of the ore piracy.

Who's By.The.Book? I nominate them. Miners shouldn't be flying Geishas, or whatever the heck that was.

IMHO, the only Transports Miner IDs should fly is the Hegemon, since that is the only transport used to mine. I'm sick of these people in non-mining pwnships.
