What about making them able to survive a mini-razor shot, but insta-killed by nukes? When you're fighting someone with nukes you can always outlast them, but when you're fighting someone with a mini-razor you're always on the defensive. The fight can end at any moment.
I find the biggest disadvantage of the LF to be offense, like Sindroms here! I am intrigued and very, very interested in this idea of a new mini razor idea thing, the mini glaive. If it works like a SN does for bombers (can equip it like a torp, but not fire a Mini on LFs), then it'd be something quite awesome, and would add a lot more attraction to the LFs.
However, I find that the biggest problem with a LF is shield, not armor. Armor can always be whittled down easily enough, but, shield is a bit harder. Making a weaker mini razor that damaged shield as well would do the LF very well. Making the LF choose between the Mini Glaive and the CD, also, would make for nice interactions. It'd still make the divide between Police and Military evident, as Police will mostly focus on stopping smugglers and military, well, wouldn't on LFs.
But, the problem with implementing that is the use of Sunslayers and other Torps anyway...

Try the Scimitar. I know, I say that a lot, but it's one of the slower LFs (probably because it's a smaller one.) I have issues with some of the faster ones, too (like the Falchion, ugh), but the Scimitar's just about right for me.
So, we seem to have some disagreements about what'll make LFs better... I have a crazy idea. Try each out. Give us Sirius-wide Civilian options with better weapons, better shields, extra mines, higher impulse/thrust speed, whatever you wanna try. Since they're Sirius Civilian, any faction can use them, and we can easily gather data on what works best.
Hell, I'd probably buy every single one of 'em.
Look at the HF class. You've got a bigass ship with LF agility and near-VHF firepower (Crow), an agile flying saucer with Slipstream guns and a Sabre powerplant (Marauder), a heavy HF with six class 9 guns instead of a mix of 9s and 8s (Kingfisher), and whatever the hell the Bulldog is. Why not try the same thing with LFs, using that to see what works for people?
I've flown it, it is rather large and with a MR it can dish out punishment. And it has enough firepower that EQUALS a VHF.
The only thing is, what the main problem is that any ship can spam any type of missile or projectile and a LF WILL be forced to dodge it rather than shoot back... And with the current damage thats able to be done, we sometimes cannot deal much damage to our targets before they manage to regen.
Perhaps increase the turning speed of all Light Fighters by a bit? I've found alot of Heavy Fighters to be utterly godly compared to both VHF's and LF's.

I'd say there is ok variety in the class now, you ave Loki with torp slot but rather large, then tiny and responsive Liberator/Hussar/Wyrm, multi-gun Scimitar/Decurion and fast turning/bad dodging Tigershark/Griffin
It is however important to make one thing clear here:
LFs are not meant to be extremely universal/popular. They are rather specialized ship that should work in some roles.
They should not be so fast or so hard hitting that fighting them in VHFs becomes pointless. Anyone who has ever fought or flew Nomad Fighter in a bigger fight knows what I'm talking about.
They could use some small changes, but not a universal big buff which will make them into some ultimate killing machine.
I think we can agree that LFs problem is not that they are too slow/easy to hit, but more that they might do a bit too little damage. Because of what I wrote above I see own gun classes and other radical measures as simply too much.
The things I liked so far were:
- extra mine slot
- more power regen/capacity
- torp slot on some more of the big ones (Hyena, Partisan and Phantom (with dodging decrease) come to my mind)

We have Razors... Mini razors...
WE HAVE GLAIVE... but no MINI GLAIVE..... yes i know its gallic. But say a Mini-glaive..... its very fast...... much faster then MR... but less damage and energy.... just to make this interesting... we make it able to -almost- instakill a VHF, without uau of any sort...

The Mini glaive will be a high speed weapon.... should fit well, given that most LF/HF only have between 6-9000 energy....
Oh yeah... we need a buff to the class 8 guns too... like Wyrm.... class 8 is 480 hull... class 9 = 630
something like that.... its a HUGE gap... thats what im saying... say we buff all lvl 8 guns with 25-50% more hull and shield.. but just 10-15% more energy.... really, it should balance itself out...

These stats are completely overpowered. Take the other energy based fighter torpedo into account, the outcast Inferno.

550 m/s
680m range
8200 energy
It's the fastest of the torpedos yet and already pretty easy to hit the enemy with, but can't do anything to the hull, so that mini-glave/micro-razor/whatever should have 500m/s while having about 700-800m and 5k hull damage at best. Or increase the inferno shield damage to 50k. caps would cry. (ok, actually that would be fun)

I think it's quite simple solution to increase LF damage while keeping everything else the same.
Of course, they shouldn't be buffed too much so they're not better than 9 class guns in any way of course. But now there's just a huge gap in DPS between 8 and 9 class. For example damage difference between 9 and 10 isn't that big.
Maybe increase powerplant regen on certain LFs aswell, but I'm not looking forward to that very much.

While eating some kind of blue marshmallow-like substance, I agree with the statement above for it would buff my Marauder's firepower as well.

Being forced to use mines is a luck based proposition, and having ammo based damage isnt a good thing for when you run out. Plus all LF's with 2 8's and 2 nines are faction/restricted in some way.
