its not impossible... look at Dur Shurrikun and the nomad artifact in Newcastle, they both have "beams" that expand outwards to smaller platforms. the damage would just have to be 4/6 refire persecond, which honestly is fast enough.

if you just make the nozzle effect on the turret a large beam effect like on many of the nomad structures and make the actual projectiles instantly hit the target and remain invisible then there you have the beam weapon

a way to counter this is to

1. slow down the turret turn speed so its literally crawlling and hence only useful on large vessels
2. slow down the bullet so that its not "instant" but fast enough to be considered instant, tbh the Battleship Battlerazor goes pretty fast, that would probably do the trick.

You have a good thought with the nozzle effect- however, suppose the range is 1k and you hit a target 200m away. The beam effect will still extend 1k even though the projectile only made it 200m, and it will look pretty silly. That said, I don't recall if that's actually been tried, but I can't see any way that wouldn't have that problem.

If you're thinking that perhaps you can have the beam trail off of the projectile... well, we tried that too. As long as your weapon is only moving coaxially with the "beam", it looks fine. Once you add in any other motion- like, say, strafing or turning- it looks incredibly silly.




The rejection here is not from lack of enthusiasm about beam weapons or an unwillingness to try. As a member of the dev team, I can testify that we (by "we" I mean the people who do effects, that's not my field) have tried again and again, but it simply isn't feasible on moving ships. On stationary objects or ships only moving coaxially with the beam, however, it's completely doable. Any other movement, though, and it looks absolutely silly.

plus all youd have to do is make it so the beam dissappears when you stop firing...simple thing just like the cargo tractor beam graphic....


and also...if it has 1k range and hits a target 200 m away....no that would not look silly......cause the beam going right through the ship implys that it is slicing with a beam

It takes MUCH less that a couple of seconds to move the ship away from the beam's axis.

Then what, it's an instakill weapon? Because no ship could survive after being completely pierced from side to side. Shields and armor are there exactly to avoid that.
Come on, just admit it: you simply want an uber weapon for bullying around. You're not the first, you won't be the last. But no.

did i also forget to mention how gamma radiation and neutrinos can easily go right through most material?those two things being a byproduct of most nuclear explosions?the fact that it would easily be feasible using gamma radiation to heat and thus destroy a peice of metal eventually while still soem of it passing through?

how was that effect created?

a beam weapon that took 15-20 seconds to charge, took all the energy from powerplant, shield and thruster.

dead in the water, but able to pop biiiiig non-moving targets.

nb, not for snubnoses.... no way.... lets put this on big ships only, and maybe only type of them, perhaps to the bret GB, as it is the size of Thames Station, and lets face it, desperate measures and all that, what what?

Show me where it's done in Freelancer? I managed at best to pass by the edges of the sun corona and my armor started frying, as it should do. Besides no, it is not impossible in physics, it would only require an extremely powerful shield. Stars are just balls of superheated ionized gas; we already know that big ships have their own graviton emitters, or people wouldn't be able to walk in them. That can be used to shield against the star's gravity well. If you can protect yourself from the nuclear reaction, basically by boosting a lot of power to shields (and big ships have big power plants) then there's no physic impediment to passing through them.
it's science fiction after all... you should debate about the same existence of those starships.

Neutrinos are harmless. Period. Their mass interaction is so weak that just managing to detect them is hard as hell.
Gamma rays can pass through some materials, true, but they as well are harmless against inorganic stuff. They can't melt a ship's hull, they're mostly charged photons, the infamous radioactive "green glow". And they're easily stopped.
Gamma rays that require 1 cm of lead to reduce their intensity by 50% will also have their intensity reduced in half by 4.1 cm of granite rock, 6 cm of concrete, or 9 cm of packed soil. Frelancer ships have hull platings much better than that, and there's the energy shield as well. No way a single gamma ray is able to pass.

not really on point 1....electromagnetic sheilding can only protect partially against solar radiation....sides...if there was such a thing as a graviton sheild...if you ever had of gone to science class

the graviton in theory is the particle that transmits gravity...to make a sheild out of gravitons would be pretty effective...but the amount of gravitons required would most certainly in physical theory create a space/time distortion and destroy any matter held inside...unless of course it were made of theoretical exotic matter of negative mass which is repelled by gravity....but exotic matter hasnt even been proven to exist in the fl universe yet


your statements about gamma radiation are true...but only up to a certain point....this would involve the amount of gamma rays in a perimitive atomic bomb explosion....or gamma rays in a lab....but what im talking about is gamma radiation on many orders of magnitude greater....(basically a beam of gamma radiation so densely packed that its nearly solid)....also gamma radiation has been noted to severely damage electrical systems (or perhaps what usually comes with gamma radiation regardless...gamma is pretty much merged with emp)....so due to game mechanic limitations electrical systems damage would be translated into hull damage....the gamma radiation in the focused beam would be like a married byproduct of the more damaging types of radiation...eh...like the muzzle flash of a gun

also the theory about the hull damage due to the radiation is derived from another principle of physics entirely....


in theory if you pack too much energy of any kind into a small point in space...you create a rift in space/time...causing it to be unstable

this sort of energy of the nuclear that i talk about being confined in a magnetic bottle...would be basically like...the detonation of a nuclear warhead many gigatons more powerful than the average hiroshima grade atomic warhead.(if 5000 units of plutonium can be traded many times daily we indeed have enough space in the ships for the warhead not to mention the nuclear material)..focused into a cylyndrical area of no more than about half a foot round....most of the purported size of the beam would be from photon emissions escaping from the magnetic envelope...the magnetic envelope of the magnetic bottle being adjusted so that the photons would escape and wouldnt destabilize the magnetic bottle (being as the power requirements)...

this amount of energy...neutrinos and all...would indeed be able to pass through the hull of the ship light emission wise....but the amount of nuclear energy of a even a 50 gigaton nuclear warhead would distort the space around it when focused into such a small area....thus creating massive hull damage from the warping of the hull....there is your theory about no hull damage out of the window you third grader
