I think they don't really care much about each other. Gaian primary concern is to protect gaia by eco terrorism which is in edinburg. Dublin is a system with a stench of death. There is nothing left to protect there. Also, now gaians are more simple pirates than anything else, but again playing simple pirate in disco is a bit too boring, so we got idealistic gaians once again.
So if there is not enough reasons to shoot each other, why they should?
From my inRP point of view, Mollys were always just some sort of independence fighters, most of them quite friendly, after a while. I respect them and they mostly leave me alone when I'm floating above the Hood. Some of them do that because I er...kinda helped them to shoot off an annoying Corsair...
Y'know...It's been forever & a day since I've even seen a vanilla-ish repsheet. Anyhoo, that said, something that should be kept in mind is that the Anvil people created the Gaians as simple space-filler & gave next to no thought as to their background, motivations & diplomacy. Therefore, all we could in the early days of disco (& still do to this day) is create the reasoning ourselves as we went along. So, the way I figure, you can't really get a straight answer from anyone about why the pure vanilla gaians & mollies are enemies, because none of us were working at Anvil, or in the heads of the devs at the time the deadline was bumped up in order to rush the game to market.
We simply have to take disco history into account to get the answers.
Later when I have more time, I'll do my best to post again & explain some of the RP of yesteryear that justifies the diplomacy the gaians have now.
...heh! unless some of the old timers feel like beating me to it:crazy:
I'm just sayin' but, put yourself in their shoes for a sec.
You are working your job & plugging along nicely developing the game, then all of the sudden your bosses come in & tell you that your deadline has been pushed up significantly.
When time becomes short & your job is at stake, corners will always get cut...that's just the way reality is.
Hey, it's not as if I'm blaming the developers for this, they did a great job with freelancer. It was a lot better than I thought it would be when I picked it off the shelf.
But I'm just saying that some of the things didn't make sense. A lot of the things don't make sense within RP from the developers, but then again I don't think that the developers saw the backstory/rp of each particular faction to be something of great importance considering I don't imagine they planned to have something like discovery come along and turn it into an RP server.
Most of the things that didn't make sense in the original have been fixed now, just look at all the different ways the factions reputations with each other in comparison to the original.
Though that being said, I still don't see the gaian-molly thing. Do they really have any conflicts of interest/any reason to be hostile? The Molly/Outcast thing is gone now, right?

Anyone seen what a mine does to it's surrounding area?
Spoil from deep mines and then theres open cast mines. Even worse.
I'm not surprised at the relationship between Gaians and the Mollys. That said, any miners.
As for Bretonia, aren't they the dirtiest systems in Sirius thanks to the rush for industrialisation?
The Bretonians trying to catch up?
And Kusari, I would imagine it is an alliance of convenience. Corsairs?
I'd think it's all about the Bretonians, the Mollys and the Hessians. Again purely one of convenience. More convenience than that of the Kusari one infact.
Thats just my take on it anyhow.
A Molly and a Gaian walk into the bar. The Molly calls the Gaian a horseface and challenges him to a duel, since there's no way a Gaian scientist could fly half as well as a Molly. The Gaian beats the Molly. Rumors about where Morgan the Molly went after the night on the bar turn into a general disdain for Gaians. Suddenly, bar fights in Rochester turn into fights in space. There, you have an explanation.
Does everything need to make complete and total logical sense? Can't things sometimes be silly? I like silly. The Gaians dislike the Mollys and like the Kusari because they do. It's an emotional relationship which has been built throughout the Disco history. I don't really think it has to be explained in too much detail for someone who can't take the time to put one more letter down in "have."

[12:49:19 AM] Elgatodiablo: You know its nice that you have all that proof and all, Bacon... but I just don't believe you.
OK though, seriously, I like bacon's p.o.v. simplicity at its finest:cool:
I know I said yesterday that I'd post specifics when I had the time, but it would be so much easier to nutshell it instead.
The kusari/gaian thing began between Zelot & RDY back in the day who were the leaders of the AFA & NLH at the time & it was fun to roll with it.
After RDY gave the NLH to me, I did my best to expand his idea of a 'true gaian' & that translated to trying to convey a more overt predjudice against the corsairs.
Also, In a very measurable way, I believe it's mostly my fault that there is confusion today about gaian/molly relations as it was me that took the lead alongside Bjorn in drafting the NLH/MR non-aggression pact. It was only meant to be a temporary experiment prior to the release of .85, yet I never took it off the books as I should have so very long ago.
I can offer a very simple & shining example of why the gaians & mollys are enemies:
When there are mollys, BAF & kusarians within the same area, the mollys will side with the BAF
From the MR facstat- The Molly Republic will assist the BAF against Kusarians if all three groups come into contacts at the same time - for if Bretonia falls, so do the Mollies.]
Now, correct me if I'm wrong, but I understand that the MR is no more & replaced with the molly seperatists now, & to be honest, I've yet to bring myself up to speed on what they're about & if their stance has fundamentally changed in relation to the MR's willingness to sleep with the enemy on occasion when they felt the situation warranted it.
Unless the MS has changed that, it is counter productive for the gaians to befriend the mollys on the whole.
I'll cure my own ignorance later when I get some time to go read up on the MS patchover.
