The Kushan were a race exiled to a remote, harsh planet in the depths of space. (I'll spare you the boring [for most people] political details.) Upon their discovery of Hyperdrive (Think Star Trek Warpdrive, or SW Hyperdrive), the Taaidani Empire, the race that exiled the Kushan found them, and destroyed their home planet.
The Turanic Raiders are, the best way to describe them I suppose, the Vikings of their time. The first deep-space encounter with another species the Kushan had after the advent of Hyperdrive.

Also, the C-Trans is a Star Wars ship.
